I just also kind of think that after years of mass political turmoil across the region, international diplomatic realignments, and transiting political figures, I'm not entirely confident in saying anyone really knows what the region looks like going forward in one way or another.

It's not that I think things look exactly good for the PA. They're functionally relegated to sitting in the corner and watching a slow-motion annexation of the West Bank while Gaza is effectively turned into an unsustainable UN mandate.

I mean, idk, I think it's going to be another decade until anyone really knows what the relationship between the PA and Israel ends up looking like. A lot of things just depend on what politics looks like when Abbas and Netanyahu are off the political stage.

I have no real problem engaging with Hayya so we can produce a political outcome to get a cessation in fighting. But I see no reason that HAMAS should be given international legitimacy, especially given that the PA exists

I generally believe that engaging with actors is necessary to produce political outcomes, and when you have someone you can work with, you should.

But, I do think it's worth making a distinction between orgs and individuals that should be given international recognition from those who shouldn't.

I mean, anyone can write nice statements. But that doesn't change that HAMAS only held power through a coup and violent purges of the PA, followed by decades of violently suppressing any political enemies.

HTS has made more meaningful, verified steps to uphold its commitments than HAMAS ever has.

I'm not really sure I would say they're comparable or that Jolani is more extreme. It would be more akin to Hayya breaking with HAMAS, creating a new organization, and making credible commitments regarding the nature of their governance

I mean there has been quite a lot written about the gradual moderation of HTS over time, and it does seem like Jolani is committed to generally attempting to uphold commitments, whereas HAMAS is still fundamentally an autocratic organization that will engage in indiscriminate killings.

It’s an example of how US engagement can produce a positive outcome and the people bitching about it are going to hate to look at the history of 90% of America’s current allies
