By curiosity I was checking my youtube channel, and it turns out the first normal battle theme for Nian-Xi Prelude reached 100 views.
Nice.

(Proof of concept, really. I'm probably going to use hand-drawn textures and see how that turns out...)
09.02.2026 18:14 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0speaking of cheesy
09.02.2026 18:14 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Also Devil Summoner's Taunt (or HEY-HEY-HEY!) and Diable de Corps animations are too funny not to try and replicate.
There's also Soul Hackers' Armageddon skill, and the many item animations where you just throw the object and it explodes.
I want cheesy 90s Pre-rendered animations for my games...
Both Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers have two animations for each skill, for when an ally or enemy uses it. So a fireball may come out of the camera or toward it depending on who is casting it.
That's a really cool detail I want to replicate for my games.
Currently forcing myself to learn Effekseer for the sake of making custom animations, and it's not all bad, actually!
If I get skilled enough, I'm 100% replicating Devil Summoner/Soul Hackers animations. The fact animations are in 3D means you can play around with the camera and make variations.

Golem Armor - Moonlight Concerto
this is its design :b
I will include these in the files, but their designs won't be seen in game (too much work for me).

It's official! One day from now on! The Nian-Xi Chronicles: Prelude is releasing on February 9th!!!
Thank you everybody who tried the demo, and those who playtested the full version. This would not have been possible without you.
People may also think ailments make bosses too easy. But Atlus already implemented a solution in Etrian Odyssey's Resistance Buildup mechanic.
That makes party members and enemies alike become more resistant to the same ailment the more it's applied to them.
It can easily fit in MegaTen, I think.
I mention those two games specifically because it goes to show P-Studio is willing to make ailments and weaknesses be a factor in their boss fights, but only halfway through as there are still many main bosses with no weaknesses and immunity to ailments/crits, shutting down a core aspect of combat.
08.02.2026 01:33 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Reload thankfully kept the Tartarus bosses' weaknesses and susceptibility to ailments. They even made a joke boss that has 9999 HP and high defense but can be instakilled with Hama.
P5R also made many bosses be susceptible to ailments, which was neat because it allowed for a lot more strategies.
I haven't played Metaphor, so I'm not sure if they addressed this in that game. But P6 should definitely allow for bosses to have weaknesses too.
And it's not like that'd make them too easy, the games I mentioned previously already showed you how you can make challenging bosses with weaknesses...
Outside P-Studio, SMT V later addressed this by giving everybody weaknesses (even superbosses) and allow you to interact with the Press Turn system fully. Even Devil Survivor made the final boss have weaknesses and give you a chance to get extra turns, the main gimmick, and that was before P5.
07.02.2026 18:52 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0P5R may be an unbalanced game in general, but one thing you can't deny is how it made a much better job integrating the One More system into boss fights.
Because being honest, when bosses have no weaknesses and are also immune to crits/ailments, it's basically as if One More didn't exist at all...
I'm also eventing a possible "Retry Battle" option that will let you restart boss fights without the need to watch previous cutscenes again. But this requires more playtesting than the other QoL, so it might come up later on rather than at release.
06.02.2026 14:14 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Among the small list of "last minute QoL" for Prelude:
-Map sprites for NPCs and Event Cutscenes/Battles
-Better Battle Logs, so you know what states/buffs are being applied to and when they disappear
-The shop now upgrades via story progression and not just via the "Lost Merchandise" questline
I genuinely love Wizardry IV and its map design btw.
And this is absolutely not a coping mechanism that I developed after having gone through it like four times because the PSX version is bugged and won't let me reach the true ending so I had to switch to the DOS version which is its own hell and--
Apparently most possible ideas I have for my next few games tie themselves back to Wizardry IV one way or another
"I could do a summoning class--" Wizardry IV
"I could do a dungeon where you start at the bottom and try to escape--" Wizardry IV
"Spinners + Dark Zones + Warps--" Wizardry goddamn IV
I don't usually comment on directs but like... Man.
Hamster announcing they would make ports/localizations for console games and not just arcades was somehow the most exciting part for me, lol.
Though I'm happy for Bomberman, too!
And yet to this day I see people saying "Don't play HD, just play the Untolds" or "Why remaster the DS versions and not the Untolds" as if they're not entirely different experiences.
It's not like P3 and P3 FES because it's not adding content to the original -- it's replacing it with new stuff...
I'd mention Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2 have both a remaster and a remake.
The HD collection is just the originals, but better in both presentation and gameplay.
The Untolds however change basically everything about the originals even in their "classic" modes. They're not replacements for the originals.
"On-command Final Boss fight" unironically sounds pretty fun. Like games that let you do their hardest sections first.

Nian-Xi Prelude is done! Everything is finished, from story to gameplay. It took a year, but it's finally complete.
Right now I'm going to do playtesting, which might take a while given the game's length (10 hours or so). But expect the game to arrive early on February!
Stay tuned!
Band-aid solution, sorry (programming is my passion!!!1!).
Hell, I still don't even know why it happened. But it was probably the most annoying bug the game had. The kind that could cost someone their run (and I *think* it already has!).
If this happens again I'm gonna scream though.
So for the longest time I was dealing with a bug that made it so choosing an action, but then cancelling it moved the cursor down for some reason. It could even go out of bounds.
...It was cursor memory, which by default it's turned on. So I had to hide the setting and have it set to off.
...
Improved HUD.
Moonlight Concerto.

In preparation for the full release, I also updated the itch io and gamejolt pages for Nian-Xi Prelude.
I do need to learn HTML to make prettier pages at some point...
