This is my second experiment on my journey from traditional pen and ink to fully digital art: a vignette from Grimm's Fairy Tales, The Frog Prince, with a steampunk twist Using Affinity Photo 2 and my humble little HUION Inspiroy 2 pen tablet, I'm working toward digital art with a mostly dry brush watercolor look. In this piece, I discovered the "Comic Ink" brush that came with Affinity, and began using "The Magician" brush from DAUB. The Magician is indeed magic, and would soon become my go-to digital watercolor brush for almost everything. After constructive feedback from a few agents and art directors, I've been hard at work updating all 16 illustrations for my picture book, Fred and Ethan's Spectacular Discovery. I've finished all the line work and am now diving into the digital watercolor. I just finished my second artwork (6th in the book), where Ethan imagines there could be a genie inside the bottle he and Fred found on the beach. Completed using Affinity Photo 2 and my Huion Inspiroy 2m pen tablet. It's a challenge working on a 22-inch-wide high-res digital painting with a small pen tablet, but I'm happy with the result. I'm reworking all of the artwork for Fred and Ethan's Spectacular Discovery. The original pen and ink art was designed for a publisher's mid-1990s standards, and after constructive feedback from art directors and agents, I'm reworking almost everything as two-page spreads (in digital watercolor). Here's the prototype first spread to establish the style. Completed using Affinity Photo 2 and my humble Huion Inspiroy 2M pen tablet (a 9,000 pixel wide canvas is a challenge with a small tablet).
