Above all, people need to stop viewing history like a Marvel movie, with nothing but superheroes and supervillains. Instead, people need to understand and embrace the complexities and nuances. You can be critical of slavery and the annihilation of native peoples, and still be a patriot.

Trump wants the traditional patriotic display. As someone with a graduate degree in history, there is a place for patriotism. The US has a lot to be proud of. But history, like the present, is extremely complicated, and the darker facets should be displayed as well and not silenced.
