Listening to this album by @petergregsonmusic.bsky.social a lot at the moment. He supported Agnes Obel at the recent concert at The Royal Albert Hall. We could only make out the top of his head from where we were sat so instead of watching I just listened & stared at the beautiful ceiling. Dreamy 👍🏻

Creating this album was as much about discovering a new writing process for me as it was about recording the music I wrote.

"Peter Gregson" is the closest I’ve come to capturing the music in my head — and looking back at these behind the scenes moments reminds me how special that process was.

The city’s still half-asleep - and you’re sitting on a moving truck, cello in hand, playing to the sunrise.

Probably the craziest, most beautiful thing I’ve ever done.

It’s something so deep rooted we can’t explain it.

This piece is led by the cello, but questioned by the string quartet to form a call and response at times, which creates a texture I truly love.

Horizon. I am drawn to the idea in astronomy of an “event horizon” where in the context of black holes, nothing, not even light, can escape. I feel this has a beautiful analogy with our most human of emotions; the love we feel for a child or partner which endures all

This, more so than any other track, is the most closely inspired by the ‘songs without words’ legacy that inspired the record; lots of space for the melody to soar, and nowhere to hide. Ritual is available now wherever you get your music.

We recorded it at Paul Epworth’s magnificent The Church Studio, one of my favorite recording rooms in the world. He has a monster Neve mixing desk in the middle of the live room, and a beautiful Rhodes from 1973!

It is the perfect accompanying instrument at this point of this record, a glorious hybrid of organic and electric, simultaneously presenting the weight of a church organ but with bell-like brightness…

Ritual is a piece for Cello and Rhodes piano. I have always loved the textural sound of a Rhodes, which is an electric piano from the late 60’s with a unique, evocative sound.

"Ritual" the next single from my new album is out today;! I hope this simple little melody can give you space to think and just "be".

There’s something incredibly freeing about making a decision and sticking to it. It helps you move forward, rather than delaying the decision making process later and later. I hope this is interesting - I’ll talk about the modular synthesiser in my next post!

So I wanted to remove my interaction with computers are far as possible in the creation of this album, slow down, step back, really listen. We even took this to such a level to record at Real World which, unusually but magically, has the mixing desk and live room blended in one space.

I think growing up when I did (I’m now 38) I am both digitally native but remember a world before Google. I don’t, however, remember a studio world without computers.

On this record, one way we did that was by working with tape. Not only does it have a really great textural sound, but there is significant effort and time involved in editing, auditioning, redoing… things that take a snap of a finger in the digital domain.

Part of that, for me in the studio, is about committing to a performance, or particular sound there and then rather than hundreds of options leaving it open to tweak and change indefinitely.

Something I’m definitely maturing into is having fewer options. Really committing to an idea, knowing when something is good and moving forward.

So when it comes to producing these records, I go to really obsessive measures to capture the sound I’m hearing and wanting to share.

I guess that comes from my earliest interaction with music being the cello, where you draw the sound out of the string with the bow, rosin on the string to create friction, then pressure, touch, and balance create the sound you want.

Music for me is a very tactile thing. I want to be able to touch the sounds, feel them in the space of the record…

Since ‘Vision’ was released a few weeks back, I’ve had a number of people ask about some of the technical aspects of making this record, so I thought I’d share a little bit about a few things that interested me from making it.
