Doom enables other response options that are not in play without it.

Republicans just don’t respect limits on their power when they think they can get away with it and will put limits on Democrats that they themselves ignore.

Similar to how conservatives literally have everything they want right now with total control and yet their media still focuses almost exclusively on what makes the audience mad. A happy audience might think it’s safe to touch grass and stop consuming.

My wife and I have had a run of bad luck in the past few years in many ways (professionally, financially, healthwise, etc.) but we find a lot of solace in our family and it's hard not to note the absence of that in people who don't have it even when everything else seems to be going ok for them.

Underrated big shift in the influencer era in terms of who has cultural capital: away from performers, writers, artists, musicians etc and to people who are really good at running a small business and doing SEO/social media.

Pretty polar opposite political valences in those skillsets.

Becoming convinced that the NYT and even RW media are bleeding news consumers to outlets with varying standards that don't live in fear of reporting negative news about Trump.

The explanation I saw today that resonated a bit with me is the US business class wants a labor force kept in line even more than every last drop of profit, and Trump doesn’t deviate from doing things to enable the former.

Remember when people said Trump would leave power peacefully? For some reason we just have to let Trump do what he wants, no matter what.

The US just keeps accommodating Trump. He has yet to face a single consequence for anything he's done as president. I don't even know where the red line is at this point.

More likely this is the new normal we have to plan around, and nobody with any power will really make a big enough deal about it, until the great reckoning where all this collapses

I knew the broad outline of the story already, but found it oddly reassuring that Billy Joel, like me, felt too East Coast for LA. Everyone was on such an even keel there, I always felt like I was "laughing a bit too loud" and harshing their mellow. And I thought I was chill! Not that chill though.

I grew up on Long Island, so of course I watched and enjoyed the Billy Joel documentary. Was it 5 hours long? The time flew right by. Bruce Springsteen was better than all the music critic talking heads at describing why Billy Joel is special. I am glad everyone feels like they can admit it now.
