Too real

Counting down the 1000 greatest rock and roll songs of all time and making other lists of my favorite tunes and albums. Rock and roll is my favorite genre but I truly like a little bit of everything, from classical and cumbia to honky-tonk and highlife.
Too real

Gift post, no paywall.
The playlist was SO fun to make, brought me back to my NYC days in the '70s / '80s. Willie was a mixed bag for sure, like a lot of family. But goddamn his jams are hot.
Also OTD 30 years ago Neil Young released the Dead Man soundtrack. I didn't discover it until Neil became one of my fave artists years later. Its unaccompanied guitar and organ solos, with monologues from the film about William Blake in the Wild West, have an apocalyptic post-rock vibe. #brodys1996
27.02.2026 13:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0OTD 30 years ago, Bad Religion released The Gray Race. BR was my favorite band as a teen; this was the 1st album that came out while I was a fan. I loved Ric Ocasek's energetic production with barely a pause between songs. Ex-Minor Threat guitarist Brian Baker added some new vigor too. #brodys1996
27.02.2026 13:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The way Zohran baited Trump with that fake newspaper answering a 70s headline about a NY Trump is nostalgic for, just hilarious
27.02.2026 03:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0At the end of the day Trump is just a huge starfucker
27.02.2026 03:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Some people might be overestimating the American appetite for conservative entertainment slop. There have never been more options to entertain yourself and turn off what doesn't interest you.
27.02.2026 00:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Latest Bari Weiss edict: from now on Animaniacs will only be about how great the Brain is, no jokes can be made at his expense
26.02.2026 23:45 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Nobody's gonna watch it though, the whole thing is gonna be like CBS News
26.02.2026 23:38 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I wonder how much of it beyond Mamdani's personal charisma has to do with him being a cool mayor of Donald Trump's hometown. Would the LA or Chicago equivalent receive this treatment? I am not so sure.
26.02.2026 23:37 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Did you bring those newspaper props? LMAO. Talk about knowing your audience.
26.02.2026 23:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If anything they should advocate the opposite
26.02.2026 19:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am still sort of amazed at the fact that any sound recording of this fidelity is already celebrating a 100th anniversary, or that this music in particular still sounds so vigorous and fresh 100 years later. It kinda blows my mind!
26.02.2026 18:32 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0"Even contemptible men don't deserve contempt, and certainly not from you guys"
26.02.2026 18:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think Kat is directionally correct, there is so much more than the generic opposition Dems could provide, and sometimes they struggle even with that. But I do worry that if she wins and no general strike happens she's writing checks the movement can't cash and then everyone will get disillusioned.
26.02.2026 15:15 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0the true promise of AI is more work and discipline
26.02.2026 15:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You would think that prison camp leadership would be a big MAGA stronghold, GOP should be worried they didn't know a big Trump speech was happening
26.02.2026 14:56 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Are you talking about the state of the union address that happened two days ago that everyone can't stop talking about and clearly hasn't forgotten happened already?
26.02.2026 14:54 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wow a Susan Collins-style expression of concern, Soave must be really upset!
26.02.2026 14:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Gnarls Barkley preempting the flurry of 20-year anniversary articles that were no doubt already in the kitty
26.02.2026 14:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0To the extent that AI is actually able to unleash productivity it will just be used as a cudgel to make everyone work even harder
26.02.2026 14:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Music is a lot less central to the culture too, I think the internet took away a big chunk of its value as a deliverer of subcultural context
26.02.2026 14:43 β π 18 π 2 π¬ 1 π 3Wouldnβt Trumpβs polling on immigration be a lot better if Americans generally supported his enforcement stunts? Itβs like November 2024 gave them a narrative they canβt swerve from until thereβs another president.
26.02.2026 13:46 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If Trump or even a random GOP mayor pulled off something as efficient as Mamdani with the snow shovels conservative media would never stop taking about it
26.02.2026 13:08 β π 26 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0On the other hand doesnβt seem like any Mamdani attacks are sticking either
26.02.2026 13:03 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The BET Awards were where people starting learning about Project 2025 on a bigger scale. Probably more educational than a Trump speech but I guess some of us need to flatter his ego more than others.
26.02.2026 03:46 β π 74 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah I think I probably have VH1 in the back of mind as I see Etheridge's nomination to the rock hall, like I am perhaps mentally slotting her next to Deep Blue Something and Dog's Eye View. Guess now is as good a time as any to give her a real shot. I do remember that she loved Janis Joplin a lot.
25.02.2026 21:53 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Also the "b-side" of the "Semi-Charmed Life" single was as good as any of the Third Eye Blind singles off that album. Slinky in that chunky mid-90s way that rock bands tried to get dancey with some beats.
25.02.2026 21:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am usually a "the rock hall is big enough for almost anyone" sort of person but the blander rock nominees have me wondering. Did I sleep on Melissa Etheridge?
