Where do you get your wood, particularly in log form?

There's a lot of fine dust there from sanding down the raised grain. It really gets black more than gray, though in some boards (the ones I used for the top) low tannin bands are more brown. But yes, this concoction is traditionally used for make white oak black.

Now with a coat of amber shellac brushed on. I really like this.

Different boards and even sections of the same board can have different tannin concentrations. Here is the fully stained piece. It has almost a chalkiness to it.

Dribbling some of the rust-vinegar concoction on an offcut shows how different the effect is on white oak versus pine

Next up is to experiment with using the iron acetate to ebonize white oak. I knocked together this simple little side table for it.

Semi gloss Polycrylic topcoat and it's finished.

Fully dried and presume it finished reacting overnight and the color has evened out. Light sanding and topcoats on the agenda this morning.

Iron acetate reacts with tannins in the wood in minutes. The top is purplish; different reactions in earlywood and latewood make the grain patterns pop.

Back to experiments with chemical staining. Iron acetate on ... Pine? Mixed white softwoods anyhow. Its coming out very interestingly.
