She has also admittedly still been stuck up until recently in the mindset of "maybe i can still do it and maybe i can still amount to something to lizbeth" hence trying harder which means staying complacent which means all of the above

it doesn't detract from how much it traumatizes her and harms her ofc but also it adds a particular amount of "I've had to teach myself how to cope with living like this EVEN MORE so I don't just throw myself off the mansion's roof at this point" to her

Philomela's particular shift is also because she's been stuck living in the estate a lot longer than she normally does in canon, since they're both older here. It implies she's stuck trying to play struggling heiress for an even longer amount of time

I wondered for a while if they sound too out of character but honestly the fact that they're both meeting at such drastically different times and directly unintentionally influencing each other has simply caused an interesting shift in how they act with each other

the answer is in my end notes but i really did just want to write the "chise huddles over philomela protectively" scene really badly so i wrote that but i also didnt stop after that
