As a neuroscientist, I’d suggest there is a profound disconnect between what *some* computer scientists think is representative of “intelligence”, cognitive ability, or descriptions of consciousness from some in AI work.

LLMs are not how neural systems process information, nor how brains function.

Microsoft to invest over $15 billion in UAE, secures US export licenses for Nvidia chips Microsoft will invest over $15 billion in the United Arab Emirates in the seven years to the end of 2029 and has the Trump administration's approval to export Nvidia chips for its data centres there, a senior executive told Reuters on Monday.

1/UAE Chip deal offers textbook case in neo-royalism. Elite ties rather than national security drive dealmaking. The winner is not national security but Trump inner circile.

Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform is to offer users the chance to trade on the outcome of elections and sports games, extending the US president and his family’s involvement in the booming prediction markets sector.

The Trump Media & Technology Group, which controls the social media platform, on Tuesday announced it would partner with Crypto.com to introduce “Truth Predict”, which would allow users “to react instantly to developments in major current events”.

Crypto.com previously donated $11mn to Trump causes. Earlier this year the Securities and Exchange Commission closed an investigation into the company, and on Friday, it announced that it applied for a US bank charter.

In August, TMTG also signed a multibillion-dollar deal to buy Cronos, the tokens issued by Crypto.com, which sent their price soaring.

“For too long, global elites have closely controlled these markets — with Truth Predict, we’re democratising information and empowering everyday Americans to harness the wisdom of the crowd, turning free speech into actionable foresight,” said Devin Nunes, TMTG’s head.

Excuse me? So the company the President currently owns is teaming up with a cryptocurrency company to create a prediction market, which will take bets... on things the President himself has quite a lot of control over?

Gosh, I'm sure nothing bad will happen.

1 in 10 Dutch citizens are likely to ask AI for election advice. This is why they shouldn't | AlgoSoc

10% of surveyed Dutch citizens told us they are likely to ask AI for election advice. They shouldn't!

This is especially problematic as we know that the people who usually consult advice applications are undecided and are doing so right before casting their vote.

EU Google antitrust penalty halted amid Trump’s tariff threats The decision was paused by Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič against the wishes of Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera.

EU laws are cute, as long as we don't try to enforce them against American corporations.

Given US dominance in tech and this level of clarity, the silver lining here is that the EU and the member states can fire thousands of lawyers and close entire institutions.

No point, is there?

Microsoft Excel adds Copilot Al to help ...

The Verget-4.1-mini Al model | 5
successor to the LABS.GENERATIVEAI function Microsoft started experimenting
with in 2023.
Microsoft notes that you can combine its new Al function with other Excel functions, including IF, SWITCH, LAMBDA, or WRAPROWS. The company adds that information sent through Excel's COPILOT function is "never" used for AI training, as "the input remains confidential and is used solely to generate your requested output."
The COPILOT function comes with a couple of limitations, as it can't access information outside your spreadsheet, and you can only use it to calculate 100 functions every 10 minutes. Microsoft also warns against using the AI function for numerical calculations or in “high-stakes scenarios” with legal, regulatory, and compliance implications, as COPILOT "can
