Federal funding freeze halts key infrastructure projects in tribal communities Riverbank stabilization, lead and asbestos contamination are just some of the projects tribes planned to address before the Trump administration froze funds.

In a June court declaration, Paul wrote any further delay in starting the project “will create a risk that our village will suffer environmental, physical, and cultural harms that cannot be reversed.”

The village’s environmental director Rayna Paul told me earlier this year, if or when the grant is reinstated, the hold up has delayed the project for at least a year. That’s because the river – from which materials come in by barge – is frozen for nearly half the year.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration terminated a $20 million grant for the Native Village of Kipnuk that would have helped mitigate this type of disaster. The hold up has delayed engineering, planning and design for a riverbank that's been eroding for years, destroying homes and buildings.
