A professor challenged the Smithsonian. Security shut the gallery. As President Donald Trump seeks to reshape museums and other cultural institutions, historian James Millward has been “guerrilla teaching” visitors about changes that have been made.

Circumstances are horrendous, but this is a really cool story about the historian-led grassroots effort to document the administration’s whitewashing of history. 🗃️

An elite hitter and 9-time All-Star in the Negro Leagues, Wild Bill Wright found even greater success in Mexico. He won the Triple Crown and cemented his legacy as a Hall of Famer south of the border.

As a Latin American baseball researcher, I probably don’t talk about Cristóbal Torriente because he *is* in the Hall of Fame. But that doesn’t mean he’s well known, and he absolutely should be. Between Cuba and the Negro Leagues, a .341/.427/.503 line (172 OPS+) i 5,139 recorded at-bats. Good grief.

In 1916, Jimmy Claxton became the first Black player to appear on an American baseball card.

The multi-racial pitcher’s two-game tenure with the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League coincided with a Collins-McCarthy Candy Company representative photographing the team for Zee-Nut candy bar cards.

One such card, now a holy grail for collectors, can be viewed in the Museum’s “Shoebox Treasures” exhibit.

Jimmy Claxton appeared in just two games for the Oakland Oaks, but he left a lasting legacy as the first Black player to be featured on an American baseball card. ow.ly/42tY50Yl4Ji

Hall of Famer Willard Brown was one of the first Black players in American League history.

He later became one of the greatest baseball players ever to play in Puerto Rico, earning him the nickname "Ese Hombre" or "That Man."

Few players matched Minnie Miñoso’s blend of consistency, power, and speed. His career numbers—more than 4,500 hits, 400 home runs, and 400 stolen bases—across the U.S. and Latin America tell the story of a true all-time great.

Finished this today. While a podcast this long can seem daunting, it’s a gift to get this much out of the interviews. Dan does an awesome job. 👏

A lot of attention is paid to Cool Papa’s speed… but I might be giving away some of my go-to Immaculate Grid deep cuts here.
