Mike Johnson is letting the House stay home while the government is shut down. Here’s the kicker:

Members of Congress will still be paid on Nov. 1 unless they personally ask not to. I’ve done that. But our staff won’t get a dime. What kind of boss pays him or herself while their team goes unpaid?

I even find myself questioning my own behavior and thought processes. Did I learn this as a child? And from whom? Was this a thought process passed down or is this normal logic? Or is this just me?

My grandmother and her siblings struggled with mental illness that was likely the result of poverty and neglect through no fault of any one person.

Some of these stories are romanticized now. People were hard working, didn't complain, etc. But it doesn't address the neglect the children experienced bc their parents couldn't pay them much attention due to every moment being about survival.

Eventually the 2 oldest kids, boys, were old enough to enlist in the military and sent money home to support the family. My grandma and her sisters all attended school until about 15-16 years old then went to work on the army base. That's how my grandparents met.

They got 2 dresses and 1 pair of shoes to go to school. My great grandma insisted on making sure they were literate. One of my great aunts grew fast but they couldn't afford shoes, so they just cut the toes out. They were much like the photos Dorothea Lange published of The Depression.

Without a permanent place to live, there was no growing produce to supplement. I recall hearing stories about how my great grandma, who was a good cook, would cook for other people to get some milk for the kids.

EVERYONE picked cotton and at one point they were living in tents. The recipes you find online that are "great depression recipes"? Those were for people who could afford food. My family made a giant pot of beans and cornbread and that was food for the week.

My grandmother's family were tenant farmers (cotton) in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. My great grandfather died in 1937 from eating contaminated potted meat, so my great grandmother was left to raise 5 kids and only finished 5th grade. My grandma was 6 and traumatized forever.

I’m from a family of heavily tattooed people, most were in the military, my parents and uncle in USMC. No one has a Nazi tattoo. No one accidentally got a hate symbol. We can all point to our tattoos and tell you about what they mean. I picked a random design off the wall, a flower, not a totenkopf

I firmly believe we are in a political realignment along the values of civil rights. There is a theory floating around that it's along the lines of the working class but I disagree. When all is said and done, it will be on civil rights issues.

My household collectively speaks 6 different languages. If JD moved next door to me, a native English speaker, I would speak to him every day in a different language just to piss him off.

Layoffs are a failure of leadership to create a sustainable business model and appropriately plan. They should be hiding in shame instead of diving into a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck.

We need to bring back shaming executives who layoff large numbers of employees, file bankruptcy, or sell to private equity. They are priding themselves on their bottom line instead of being job creators who bring value to the community.

The ppl coming up with the “we must accept racism” strategy aren’t working class ppl. They’re looking at this as an algebra problem on paper. Most of them are in democratic strongholds and ignoring those of us in republican majority areas with experience talking to the voters they say they want.
