8. But insisting in the face of the evidence that LLMs are useless and that everyone who says otherwise is a dead-eyed cultist - well, it _absolutely_ does provide evidence of who is clinging to a cult's organizing prophecies after the eschaton was supposed to happen but didn't, and who is not.

This is actually how I expect the DOD-Anthropic standoff to end: with some unfavorable court rulings against the government and then a quiet retreat some months down the line.

By Tesla's own math, it reveals that its robotaxis are 4x worse at driving than humans, with redactions hiding even more details | Fortune By NHTSA standards, the Tesla Robotaxis are 8x worse than human drivers.

About every 57k miles driven by Musk’s robotaxis one gets into a wreck. That’s four times the rate of humans.

Oh, I know, I'll still vote for it, but damn it's hard to be happy about it with this stuff happening so often. Luckily, I stick with AC Transit more.

I won't say it's worth the hassle, but Oakland Grill's crab cake benedict is a nice consolation prize to free breakfast at our event.

I made my way to Jack London for breakfast and a ferry, F BART today

Always find the silver lining - took the train back to downtown Oakland, and I'm visiting an old favorite for the first time in a while before catching the nearby ferry from Jack London once I've had my crab cake benedict.

The train barked "FAILURE" for 10 minutes as we sat on the platform. Then, they had us leave the platform and the station.

Uber is surging near $100 a trip. I'm on the streets of West Oakland in a suit, missing our Future of Health Care event.

Great way to convince us to raise taxes for BART.

BART just shut down at West Oakland, they have lost all communication through the SF corridor to 24th and Mission so no trains are going to the city for morning rush hour.

They just forced my entire train out to the platform and are sending our train back to Antioch. What a cluster.

The Tax Nerd Who Bet His Life Savings Against DOGE Until Elon Musk came roaring into the nation’s capital, Alan Cole was largely a plain-vanilla investor.

Proof that you'll never go broke betting against Elon Musk to do what he says he's going to do when he says he's going to do it.

Would be nice if people stopped restating the false claim that Waymos have live humans driving them. That was based on a misleading Futurism headline that was debunked in its own article. There is way too much hype about AI tech but it does no good to misrepresent the state of things the other way.

Anthropic is now worth more than Salesforce and Uber ... COMBINED.

And its still No. 2 in valuation for San Francisco AI startups ...

At best, this is all a very weird misunderstanding, and there's simply another journalist named Nicole Carpenter who has no online presence whatsoever, and works for a very mysterious content provider. At worst, Modern Newsstand is using the names of verifiable journalists to make its work look trustworthy. Somewhere in the middle, Modern Newsstand chose random pseudonyms to publish some of its stories under, one of which happened to be the same name as mine. And if, for some reason, Modern Newsstand chose to use my name, why? I don't cover national politics, unless they relate, somehow, to the video game industry. I'm not particularly well-known outside of my own beat. It doesn't make sense. (Nicole Carpenter the other journalist, if you are real and reading this, I'm sorry I said your work isn't particularly well-written.)

I think people outside of tech don't understand that the workers who have been cut are disproportionately from underrepresented and marginalized groups, are those doing "soft" (more human) roles like design, HR (especially inclusion), and product work, and were often quiet targeting of advocates.

Jeff Bezos is proving that is not a cure for what ails legacy news orgs.

But Ed, We Can't Distrust Public Companies!
Actually, yes we can.
Whenever a company says "letter of intent" β€” as
NVIDIA and SK Hynix/Samsung did - it's important to immediately stop taking the deal seriously until you get the word "contract" involved. Not
"agreement" or "deal" or "announcement," but
"contract," because contracts are the only thing that actually matters.
Similarly, it's time for everybody - analysts, the media, members of congress, the fucking pope, don't care - to start treating these companies with suspicion, and to start demanding timelines.
NVIDIA and Microsoft announced their $15 billion investment in Anthropic over a month ago. Where's the money? Why does the agreement say "up to $10 billion" for NVIDIA and "up to $5 billion" from Microsoft? These subtle details suggest that the deal is not going to be for $15 billion, and the lack of activity suggests it might not happen at all.

By the way: anyone hear about the AMD deal or Broadcom deal? Or the SK Hynix and Samsung deals? No? Nobody changed guidance at all? Almost like nothing ever actually occurred?

As Propublica’s editors note, β€œthe policy of shielding officers' identities, particularly after a public shooting, is a stark departure from standard law enforcement protocols.

β€œSuch secrecy, in our view, deprives the public of the most fundamental tool for accountability.”

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.
