Favreau's role in lowering the bar for popular art really can't be overstated. One of the titans of replicable fan-baiting mediocrity, from the MCU to Star Wars to the Disney "live-action" remakes

Yeah, their style is so earnest and consistent that the films are inherently in conversation with each other. You'll probably have a different impression of their True Grit if you've seen Fargo, etc

It helps that their catalog basically has a learning curve. You can work your way from the Raising Arizonas and Big Lebowskis to the Miller's Crossings and Serious Mans

Turns out he's also pretty good at making horror movies!

Zach Cregger locked onto an incredibly unsettling image in those kids dashing out their doors and into oblivion. The film can't maintain that level of ominous surrealism, but it's full of fun moments like Barbarian's "measuring the murder basement" beat, which seems more Cregger's style

Weapons was delightful! Continues in the sordid horror-comedy vein of Barbarian, offers some standout nasty images, and erupts into a bloody, fist-pumping farce of a finale. Sadly less eerie than the trailers implied, but so propulsive it actually felt shorter than its running time

Preston claims that song's why he got the part - he's not much of a singer, but they were auditioning with that song, and his salesman patter is fantastic

Yeah, it never alters its thrust in terms of the idiot locals, and also believes in the power of a beautiful lie. There's some unsentimental sharpness at its core

You'd combine it with this guy, then organize the stack triggers so they're always sacrificing before tapping, but you're doing the opposite (and of course, tapping the artifacts themselves to avoid any real cost). Real sickos shit

Yeah, he’s just an incredibly sharp, genuinely wise individual. And god can he play a villain - that “people think they’re steering their own destinies, but they didn’t build the roads” line by his Robert Moses gave me chills

Oh, I love Brennan - I have tons of quibbles with Mercer, but Brennan just does what I’d like to do a thousand times better. Our watch has hit a snag though, as losing the sets and minis after S2 makes it much tougher to get a sense of the world at large or the progression of fights

Yeah, he was definitely having trouble with the implied scale of the region and conflict. You can’t really handwave the distances of epic fantasy easily in a tabletop format

A continental war arc! Brother against brother, with the cast… wait, they just gave the McGuffin away? Alright, tune in next week I guess

I felt so bad for him when he clearly had to end a session early because the players had just incinerated months of prep. And yeah, the pirate saga was also when I realized this wasn’t going anywhere

Ironically, the one major part where they stuck to the plan was also a stumble; they should have realized what they had with Caleb and Nott was far more compelling than Nott’s existing backstory

Not hard to see what happened there; Mercer didn’t want to railroad the players into a specific adventure again, so he let them choose their own. The only problem is, they kinda just didn’t

The Mighty Nein trailer is reminding me how good that cast is - easily the most compelling group of characters that Critical Role have constructed. And hey, maybe this adaptation will fix the fact that the campaign was a directionless mess
