glad you pointed it out, people keep coming up with superficial answers like slavery, surface lvl politics, one note characters or bad world building and while those are issues with the genre, the biggest reason they remain an issue is there's no lasting effect on things, no stakes like you said

the familiiar bit is related to the lore and worldbuilding of all my ocs, but the short n sweet is, verm is a witch, and his why he has the small form is spoilers for something i wont say yet :)

the other 2 is how he suppose to look, his small form an a result of an accident involving his heart and his familiar, he's a half demon so he suppose too have a human half, makes him unique among other half demons having 3 forms instead of 2
