Good point. If I were to theorize about this, I'd say perhaps Putin doesn't have as much influence now. The USA is in NATO and all of NATO desperately wants to stop Russian aggression westward. Trump has been really rude and nasty to Ukraine's leadership and pulled back his support but if he wants the USA to remain in NATO, he has little choice but to pay lip service to Ukraine.
