A photo of a finished crochet beanie, cream colored with blue, purple, and black flecks. It's worked in ribbed slip stitch with short row shaping, so it's thick and squishy and has the texture of knitting.

Finished hat! I'm really happy with how it turned out, the edges are so smooth and the whole thing is really nice and squishy. I liked learning the short rows, they were pretty easy once I figured out how to get the edges as smooth as I wanted. The slip stitch […]

I know there are alt text reminders, but what I really need is a hashtag reminder so that I don't have to edit them in every time...

A photo of an unfinished crochet beanie, cream colored with blue and purple flecks, crocheted in ribbed slip stitch (a very thick, squishy fabric with the texture of knitting). It's worked vertically (so each row goes from the brim to the center, instead of around the circumference), and uses short rows for shaping.

Apparently a long dnd session is a great time to get a lot of crocheting done. I did a good four or five sections (out of nine total). Only ten rows left, unless I decide it needs another section which is possible (luckily I'm doing alright with yarn).

Usually […]

Just got a third of the way through my hat and frogged the whole thing *again*... this time to go up a size. (I knew from the start that the large would probably fit me better, but I'd gone for the medium in an attempt to be conservative with yarn.)

It was a good thing anyway, because I […]

(No picture of the hat because I just frogged most of it again for the 5th time to try yet another technique for the ends of the short rows...)

A photograph of a piece of interlocking filet crochet, which fills the entire image so that you can't see the borders. The pattern features various geometric insects (in the photo are a large beetle, a bee, a dragonfly, and a spider) in lime green on a white background.

I've started several smaller projects since finishing the blanket. I really enjoyed working on a larger project, but I knew after 7 months of it that I wanted to knock off some smaller things before I tried something large again.

While I was still working on […]

A photograph of a crocheted blanket with lime green, light brown, blue, and dark brown stripes, separated by thin strips of cream. Each stripe has a different texture, including a couple different types of cables, bumpy triangles on a smooth background, and round bobbles.

I finally finished my blanket back at the beginning of August, but started my next projects so quickly I never got the chance to post a picture. I also haven't blocked it yet, and probably won't for awhile, so for now I'm considering it finished.

No picture of […]

Part of a dark brown blanket stripe, crocheted in the very textured alpine stitch with several rows of single crochet forming a flat band across the middle. The bottom edge is connected to the rest of the blanket, and my fingers are holding the top edge down to keep it from rolling up.

Next stripe done.

I've been learning how to splice yarn over the course of this project and I tried a Russian splice this time, which was unexpectedly easy and also surprisingly strong for how short the splice was.

An unfinished crocheted blanket, with loose ends and an attached ball of yarn, laid out on the floor. It has 7 stripes in robin's-egg blue, light brown, chartreuse, and dark brown, repeating, with a thin bar of cream separating each stripe. Every stripe has a different texture (some have ridges, puff stitches, squares set out in relief, etc.). There are gray-socked toes poking into the bottom of the picture for scale (it's about four feet wide and three feet long).

I've accidentally crocheted several pieces of my own hair into this blanket, which has prompted various philosophical thoughts on how the level of personal interaction one has with any physical work must inherently mean leaving a part of yourself behind. I think […]

According to the pattern I'm using, I've finished one sleeve.

According to my measurements, I need another 8 inches.

Seems about right.

I am also leaning toward giving myself more leniency for not achieving my goal since one of the things I decided to read was the entirety of the works of sherlock holmes bound into two volumes — the first is on my list as just one book, but in my heart it counts as at least three, I think. :P […]

I finally decided to reduce my reading goal for the year from 24 books to 12. I knew when I set it to 24 that it would be ambitious; it was 12 originally, but I was doing so well at the start of the year that I doubled it. Unfortunately circumstances have drastically reduced the amount of time […]

On a different note, I'm starting to suspect I'm not creative enough to do game design... one of my personal creative goals for years has been to write a proper interactive fiction game in inform 7, but while I am technically proficient enough to make interesting mechanics, all of the ways I […]

Several pieces of a crocheted sweater laid out on top of each other on a blue and white rug. The yarn used is a slightly variegated, purplish-grey/cream color called "fog." Two of the pieces are large squares with alternating rows of double crochet and a square bead stitch, with bands of sideways ribbing at the bottom. The front piece has a cutout for the neckline. The very bottom of a sleeve is on top, all wrinkled from the increases after the cuff and with a hook still though.

I've been a bit quiet lately, but I've been steadily working away at my sweater. I've got the front and back done, and recently started the sleeve. I only have time to crochet once a week or so, but I want to pick up the pace because I got the yarn for my next […]
