Horror sneaks in when your work doesn’t flinch. Everyday life does most the work for you.

Sorry for the late reply. I'd love to know more about The Alex Series. Can you drop a link? Thanks.

Almost monochrome illustration of a brown goblin. It wears a dark beak over its head like a mask, and a feathery cape made from various bird wings. It's holding a chalice.

I've been working to get the pages/website/print layout for @sunday-service.bsky.social done in time for submissions to open on Feb. 1st. I should probably stop reworking the website. The layout looks good. It's nervous energy, but I keep picking at it. Fingers crossed this works.

Digital illustration depicting a hooded figure. Her face is not visible, but in its place are stylized shoots protruding from the hood’s opening. Dark mountains are visible in the background.

Digital illustration in the style of a vintage storybook. A man peacefully sits in a sparse forest with his back against a tree stump. Muted red flowers grow out of his chest. Below the illustration reads β€œseveral flowers bloomed from his chest.”

Digital illustration in the style of old print. It displays three plants in various states of transformation. All are growing vague animal-like bodies: one birdlike, one serpentine, and the other humanoid.

β€œThe idea of happiness as a goal rather than a transitional state is a dangerous and much more damaging notion for a person to carry around and then just knowing that each and everyone is fucked in someway or other.” - Thomas Moore, Alone, Amphetamine Sulphate(2020)

I guess I’m just feeling as if I’m missing something since I’ve seen his work recommended on various literary platforms and discussion boards.

Tried Dennis Cooper for the first time via a short story and hit a wall pretty fast. For folks who read his work, is the graphic violence and aggressive tone central to everything he does? What do you find meaningful about his writing? Asking in good faith. #lit #booksky #reading #denniscooper

AT THEIR FEET

I couldn’t tell you how many times I tried to give myself back to the mountains. I don’t know how many lines of discretion I’d left with the novaculite peaks as I looked out over their dominion. Or how many borrowed problems I had laid upon the altar of sandstone boulders while we convened between sloping ridges.
I told them the name my mother had given me when I was born at their feet. And then I stood beneath the PawPaw trees. I asked to put down root in their soil where worry drained away so freely. I’ve walked dirt roads, asking them kindly; waiting for them to snatch me away and take me home.
They had accepted my blood and sweat, after all.
They did not respond.
That’s the thing about the Ouachita Mountains. They breathe alone and they just don’t care who you think you’re meant to be.

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

Queer literature doesn’t owe anyone joy. Not commercially viable it-gets-better arcs.

I understand the desire for transformation. For acceptance. For affirmation.

But for me?

Give me the corrosive. The dangerous. The unfinished.

Give me the lived experience. Unsentimental. Non-Redemptive.
