Hi, I'm Neil, a Linux advocate and Linux-only gamer, from Scotland. I'm also a techie - 20 years in Networking, and 10 in Cyber Security, so basically I speak fluent TLA. I also occasionally dabble with programming (Python mainly) and retro gaming too.

Wonder if Paramount realise they'd be killing off Warner if they got it. Warner has some fine franchises, but nothing they purchase would make me take up a Paramount sub.

My new favourite t-shirt just got ordered.

I laughed at this. Then I felt guilty... oops. Sorry!

On this coming Sunday, 22nd Feb, Lothian Buses introduces a set of service changes.

Since the bus tracker API changes, I am having to obtain static data (bus stops, services and route lines) from alternative sources. I've been working on this over the past month and this effort is almost complete.

Well, I suppose, but DrKonqi is the worse scenario, I think - it's a hard dependency. This new PLM might also be a hard dependency technically, but at least you can just... not use it. Stick with SDDM.

Maybe, but you can't deny that tyees been a huge amount of FUD on this subject. Just one (optional) piece of Plasma now needs one single component of SystemD. But that's definitely not how it's been picked up.

It's a hardship, but hey, you don't make the rules... 😅

Mint is most commonly recommended. I really like CachyOS, but not sure If recommend it for new users. Pop_OS was great last time I tried it.

But Mint is probably your safest option!

Dammit... now I'm worried. I haven't had to use them yet!! ☚ī¸

Isn't Bazzite based on Fedora? Heard good things about it, but I'm done distro-hopping for a while!

Mint is what I see recommended the most, yeah.

I'm a huge CachyOS convert right now because it auto-installs system snapshots that are integrated into the boot menu. So if you have an issue, you just boot the "last known good"... remember that from the old Windows days?? 😅

I'd heard that they'd improved the snap, but the weird thing about Steam is that it's probably the one piece of software for Linux that is probably best installed from their website! Although most distros also package it for convenience.

Verge required a subscription to read the article, so I only got the first two paragraphs sadly.

It's an okay choice. It got me started with Linux back in the day, around 2006. It needs a bit of fiddling occasionally, mainly Nvidia-related, because it won't ship with the drivers. People get so weird about snap too.

It doesn't sound like the distro was the problem anyway. More about software.

I think I used CoreCTL for fan speed and OpenRGB for the flashy colours. But yeah, might be a firmware issue, in which case you're hosed unless a clever person contributes a fix.

Doesn't let me read the article. What distro did he choose that caused so much outrage?

I'm a big Linux advocate, but people have to temper their expectations. Linux has a different set of software and almost none of it is "commercial". Wine is amazing, but not always the solution.

I think OpenRGB can control the RGB on Corsair kit. Works on my memory at least. But I'm with you - sod RGB! 😅

Average? One post? But millions of monthly players on Steam?

And... decades? Valve launched Steam for Linux just over ten years ago. It's been seamless for me and, clearly, hundreds of thousands of others.

This is a bizarre take.

You okay, pal? Is it out of your system now?

Meh, I don't care. Easy block.

I've only heard of @skylight.social so far. Early days though. Others might crop up, but Skylight's been around a while, I think?

AMD isn't just easier, it's invisible. The GPU driver is built into the O/S. You don't "install" it, it's just there.

Meanwhile, that makes Nvidia look bad, but really, it's much like Windows - follow a process to install a driver. But it's distro-specific. You don't install it from nvidia.com.

I wasn't aware you could self sign. Ta!

26.01.2026 16:13 — 👍 1    🔁 0    đŸ’Ŧ 1    📌 0

You'd need to set the SB status to "other O/S" or you'll get a Windows-related error message about how your UEFIboot isn't cryptographically signed.

Actually, I think Canonical used to sign their ISOs, but not sure if they (or anyone else) still do.

This isn't how "Linux systems" generally update, just Raspberry Pi systems. Also, this is a belts and braces approach.

Most folk in a Linux distro will just run a single command (or click the upgrade button on some distros) and get a new system after about 30 mins or so.

There are guides for CSP on Linux, but I have my doubts about how seamless the final solution is.

You could also check out Krita, which I've heard good things about. It's more of a drawing tool, while gimp is better focused on editing.

What distro and is it vaguely recent? Also, what chipset, do you know?

On some desktops, like Plasma, you might see it listed in settings in About This PC.

Or open a terminal (CTRL-ALT-T) and type:

lsmod | grep snd

Ah, right. I haven't used a mass re-namer ever, so can't help with that.

But yeah, almost all the motherboards I've used over the years are realtek audio. Never had any problems. What do you experience?

24.01.2026 00:00 — 👍 1    🔁 0    đŸ’Ŧ 1    📌 0

Either you've been really, really unlucky with weird hardware, or really really unlucky at troubleshooting unusual issues during searches.

I've used tens of distros across tens of PCs and never, ever had audio glitches or internet issues.

But yeah. Some Win-only apps won't run. No denying that.

How so? Been a few years since I used Ubuntu, but it's still doing well I hear, and the basis for hundreds of derivatives.

"The Microsoft of Linux" sounds pretty bad.

Are they charging now? Adding AI?? Is it the UX?
