The concern is that Trump is eager to cause violent events so that he will have an excuse to send in more occupying forces. "Don't take the bait" is often heard around here. In 2020, the federal troops provoked violence more than stopped it.

Hard to beat that.

I recall Nicklaus Kristof making a similar point, at the time, that all the protest activity was confined to about 4 blocks of the city & practically all of it was peaceful. The federal troopers, brought in from elsewhere, were provoking violence more than stopping it.

Yes, so why can't everyone involved in police work be held to those standards? Policing can be hard, dangerous work & the public tends to cut police a great deal of slack, still, there are laws. If a warrant is called for, get a warrant. Give those arrested due process. Equal protection applies.

The Framers of our Constitution were sons of the Reformation & Enlightenment. They specifically banned a state church in the USA, a reaction to the Old World ways. Our minds, our conscience, belongs to us, not the government. Our SCOTUS is dominated by right-wing Catholics who never agreed with it.

Competent, law-abiding governors will help out another state, with the NG, if asked. They don't send them anywhere to harass Americans just because they've got a boner.

Police can be sued for all sorts of misconduct. (A good friend of mine, a lawyer, made a living filing civil rights suits based upon police misconduct.) These federal actors (ICE & Nat'l Guard) act with impunity, so far.
