Been feeling 100x more dead than usual lately, so the idea of entering an eternal slumber and dream sounds more and more appealing each day, but then I think about how it might be just a bit too early for that, and now eventually entering a coma so I can take a nice long nap is on my bucket list.

the difficulty menu for classic doom, showing its 5 difficulties. Maps in classic doom have 3 different enemy spawn layouts based on the difficulty chosen, adding more monsters and replacing some weaker monsters with stronger ones when increasing difficulty.

what I really like about old FPS games is that changing the difficulty didn't change stats or AI, it added or replaced enemies in the map. it does a lot towards creative ways to increase difficulty, and it's a shame that most modern games don't do this

The concept is not just limited to difficulty either and can apply to general game design; the majority of Downwell’s upgrades mechanically change how things work and in turn changes how you play (ie: gems can now recharge your gun boots, you can now eat dead enemies to gain health back, etc).
