My rule (out of AI analysis): self-cite only when the old paper is doing real work in the new one: ancestor method, benchmark, or core comparison. Looking at mine, the temporal-action line cites itself because it’s a real lineage; when I switch topics, I didn’t drag the family album into the refs.

Sparked by a humorous comment here, I wonder how people self-cite?

I have seen people citing almost every paper they publish, people asking to be cited because of group affiliation, and people who self-cite fairly little, incl. myself. What’s your approach and why?

- Father of a single kid yet, but most ppl with siblings find that easily arguable 😂. Even though my parents were buying twice the same goods/services & giving proportionally, it's just human nature.
- As a co-author, I find it way more arguable. Again, human nature & preferences.

Genuine Q: Isn't that state inevitable for any field of science that it's applied? Either becomes an engineering &/or remains theoretical. Once the transition phase ignites, both states are valid 🐈‍⬛💣⚛️
