In April of this year I gave a speech at a major conference in San Diego wherein I argued that AI would soon be poured like gasoline onto the fire of American fascism.

That speech is pinned to my profile, if you're curious.

@adambecker.bsky.social thank you so much for writing More Everything Forever. It's one of the most important books I've ever read and has been critical in shaping what we want to make sure 1000s of teachers and leaders on our programmes know and understand about AI.

Ok now we rally at the state capitol in Austin. Massive turnout here, at least 10,000 I'd say, possibly quite a bit more. We are sweating our asses off for democracy.

Let's have some fun. In this NYT story, we see a picture of an OpenAI billboard on a college campus, suggesting the following prompt: "Give me a guide for mastering this Calc 101 syllabus. In two weeks. Small steps please."

What happens when we actually use ChatGPT to do this? THREAD!

Finding out that, "Some studios, such as the animation company Studio Ghibli, have sworn off using AI" brought much comfort. The wonderful 'My Neighbour Totoro' felt like a co-parent during the covid lockdowns.

"There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken.ย If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casketโ€”safe, dark, motionless, airlessโ€”it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell."

"Outsourcing learning, commodifying education, and deskilling humanness is not progress. The answer is easy and short: we must say no and truly mean it. These are times of Luddite pedagogy," argue Dagmar Monett and Gilbert Paquet. Read the open access article at:

Text of Stone Soup but for AI, from Alison Gopnik:

Some tech execs came to the village of computer users and said, โ€œWe have a magic algorithm that will make artificial general intelligence from just gradient descent, next-token prediction, and transformers.โ€

โ€œReally,โ€ said the users, โ€œthat does sound magical.โ€

โ€œOf course, it will be even better and more intelligent if we add more data โ€” especially text and images,โ€ said the execs.

โ€œThat sounds good,โ€ said the users. โ€œWe have some extra texts and images we created stashed away on the internet โ€” we could put those in.โ€

โ€œGreat,โ€ said the tech execs. โ€œBut, you know, this version still says a lot of dumb things. It would be even more intelligent if we could get humans to train it directly with reinforcement learning from human feedback.โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ said the users. โ€œThere are whole villages in Kenya that will jump at the chance.โ€

โ€œOK,โ€ said the execs, โ€œnow the last thing that would really make it royally intelligent is for the users to do clever prompt engineering to ask it just the right questions in the right way.โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ said the users, โ€œwe will think hard and figure out how to prompt it.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ said the tech execs, โ€œthis will be a truly, magically intelligent machine.โ€

โ€œAnd to think,โ€ said the users as they shelled out for the latest version, โ€œhow magical that this artificial general intelligence was made from just a few algorithms!โ€

Alison Gopnik describes AI as "Stone Soup" and anytime you can reference a vaguely socialist folktale from Eastern Europe and apply it to Silicon Valley technology I am here for it.
