This is Refugio Cabana Veronica in the Picos at around 2000m altitude. It's an upcycled aeroplane gun turret. Now a lot more peaceful..

When we travel somewhere in the van, we try to get a sticker for the fridge to keep tabs on where we've visited. There's not much space now! This month, we went to Bilbao, the Picos de Europa & the delightfully named Poo beach. #vanlife #Bilbao

๐Ÿ’ŠThe NHS is battling "medieval" levels of untreated illness in some of Britain's poorest communities โ€“ at a cost to the health service of about ยฃ50bn a year, or the same as the defence budget.

My big read from Barrow, Blackpool, Burnley and Blackburn:

I went to the Cabin Club when I was a student, although mainly spent time in the Razz, and vaguely remember Coconut Grove & The Grafton. #Liverpool #LostNightclubs. Shame there's no mention of the Mardi Gras club.

'Itโ€™s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness Finland is the only EU country where homelessness is falling. Its secret? Giving people homes as soon as they need them โ€“ unconditionally

HOUSING THE HOMELESS SAVES MONEY: โ€œa study showed the savings in emergency healthcare, social services and the justice system totalled as much as โ‚ฌ15,000 a year for every homeless person in properly supported housing.โ€

It works, helps people AND it saves money.

What have I seen in Liverpool this week? Kindness in person and conspiracies online | Liam Thorp After celebration turned to chaos, Liverpudlians stepped in to help those in need โ€“ while the usual suspects spread lies, says Liverpool Echo journalist Liam Thorp

I wrote for @theguardian.com about how this week's events have highlighted the best and worst of humanity - from heroic and generous acts, to social media bile.

But mainly I am just proud of how this city has come together once again.

Recognising and depowering toxic leaders

The NHS is hopeless at identifying and dealing with toxic leaders, but this is a core skill of a good manager. Even with dealing with toxic people further up the food chain.

Private social media message reading: "So far this week, one day my child got harassed and humiliated in school changing rooms. Another day her English lesson covered the debate over trans rights where she listened to ignorant class mates outline how trans women can make women uncomfortable, and came home asking whether they have a point and whether her existence actually is a big problem (she hadn't heard that transphobic argument before). She didn't feel able to speak at all in that debate lesson. She came home in tears both days. What a spectacularly shit country we have."

The right is more steep than the left. Advice is to stick to the very top. A lot of people walk on the left below the ridge and use the top as a handrail. But there is scree on the sides so it's less stable. Best advice is to look ahead and go steadily. Good luck!

02.05.2025 17:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I am not great with heights. I've crossed Crib Goch twice, once via Pen Y Pass and the other climbing up from the road on a North to S 3000s. The scramble is worse than the ridge. So make sure you have got a good description of the easiest route up. The ridge traverse looks worse than it is.
