9) ✅ Pushed the frontier on how we do research – through RADx Radical (supporting non-traditional approaches to COVID-19 testing), High-Risk High-Reward research grants, DPCPSI’s mission to identify emerging challenges and scientific gaps,

8) ✅ Championed inclusion in science – strengthening NIH’s Tribal Health Research Office, co-leading the RADx-UP (Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics – Underserved Populations) program, and advancing international scientific diplomacy as a Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) trustee

7) ✅ Promoted a cross-institute perspective – spearheading the first NIH-wide strategic plan and helping lead trans-NIH research programs on Down syndrome, maternal, child, sexual and gender minority health (INCLUDE, IMPROVE, ECHO, SGMRO)

6) and finally NIH Deputy Director for Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) and Director of that division. Throughout, her accomplishments reflected her core values as she:

5) Tara’s post-fellowship years at NIH were broad and diverse, including program leader at NINDS and NIAID, senior advisor and Alternate Deputy Ethics Counselor in the Office of the Director, Acting Director of NINR, Acting Principal Deputy Director of NIH,

4) Tara started on a traditional scientific path – a PhD in Biophysics and a Vanderbilt postdoc, studying cellular excitability in heart function and insulin secretion. It was her time as an AAAS S&T Policy fellow that brought her to NIH and shifted her career towards organizational leadership.

3) “The NIH and the people it serves were so fortunate to have your vision, talent, and positive energy for 13 years. You accomplished so much without taking credit yourself and were always looking out for the best interests of the biomedical research community.”

2) From her arrival in 2012, her humility and growth mindset earned widespread respect in its exemplification of public service. Following her termination in October 2025, former NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertagnolli wrote:
