I need scientists π§ͺ to *THINK*: Do you really believe *only* $8mil went to research w/ transgenic mice, one of the most common tools in modern biomedicine?
Or maybe fascists are targeting trans people everywhere they can, including research using animal models of gender affirming hormone therapy?
I talked to NIH officials, current and former, about what's been happening inside the agency since the Trump administration shut down their grantmaking pipeline in January. Their stories showed just how willing our new leaders are to break the law: www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

BREAKING:
The NIH summer internship program (SIP) has been officially cancelled, across all institutes.
Itβs a sad loss for the brightest science students in America, for American science, and for future cures for diseases like cancer and Alzheimerβs. π§ͺ 1/
BREAKING: 22 states sue NIH over Trump administration's new 15% cap on overhead for federal research grants. Suit filed federal court in Boston contends lifesaving research 'will grind to a halt' under the policy. Doc: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Federal restrictions & funding freezes threaten vital research and halts scientific progress that benefits all Americans.
Join fellow #NeuroAdvocates in urging Congress to protect congressionally approved funding & ensure uninterrupted support for the scientific workforce.

Really appreciate Jonathan Lambert pointing out that NSF grants are congressionally mandated to weigh how grants broaden participation in science, putting the administration's executive order against DEIA in conflict with, and potentially undermining, congressional legislation

To get people to talk about any problems in the lab, I asked what people wish they knew before they joined the lab and what they wish they could change. Then decide if those will be a deal breaker for you or not. Eg will slow communication bother you?
Youβll do great! Always happy to chat more :)
The communications pause at health agencies has extended to external procurement orders for supplies for internal research @ NIH, sources tell @reportergoodman.bsky.social & me. Some researchers worry they won't be able to buy test tubes to draw blood or food for animals: www.cnn.com/2025/01/24/h...

Hi, Vox reporter here: If you've had a study section, NIH travel, or other NIH-related meeting cancelled (or not), raise your hand! Reply or DM me, and repost for visibility if you're able.

25.11.2024 01:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I did a postbac and Iβm grateful for it, but I did it because I wasnβt sure that grad school was right for me. Iβm glad programs exist for that, but Iβm not sure thatβs the point of programs like the ones youβre talking about. I just want to see people effect change where they have actual power!
25.11.2024 01:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There are so many ways to see that someone can succeed in a research environment w/o people having to take two extra years in their training to prove it first. Why not expand the (narrow, biased!) standards we use now and trust that people can use the skills they already have to succeed in a lab?
25.11.2024 01:15 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0my frustration w these programs is that theyβre often set up by the same people who decide grad school admissions, and I think a better approach to admitting more marginalized students is toβ¦admit more marginalized students. Why not focus on where you can make immediate change? Why focus upstream?
