Spreading chalk on the overlying clay soil helps increase its pH (and thus bio-availability of nutrients) while improving soild consistency and water retention.

Still occasionally see farmers doing it around here but for the most part artificial fertilizers have replaced the practice.

Paths of poison across our oceans:

of 90411 oil spills from ships, only 474 were reported in a 5 year period - satellite analysis exposes high density "slick belts" coinciding with shipping lanes.

Our latest article with @pulitzercenter.bsky.social journalist Saroj Pathirana out now:

tbh maglevs are expensive boondoggles, ironically something demonstrated by Japan's horribly delayed, over-budget attempt

It's word for word the same rational Serb nationalists made in the 90s: we have a history of persecution so we get to do 'defensive' ethnic cleansing now. No you fucking don't actually.

As far as I'm concerned what is happening in Gaza right now is akin to what happened in Eastern Europe in the late stages of Nazi occupation. Any bastard still making excuses can go to hell.

Although perhaps the effects are somewhat more keenly felt seeing how much of the justice system seems to be effectively non-functional nowadays.

I've also come to realise that a lot of it is driven by a ridiculously rose-tinted view of the recent past

Yeah I listened to the world service a bit in the car yesterday. The presenter was interviewing a WHO official about the apocalyptic situation in Gaza and every five seconds it was "but the IDF says this" and "Hamas run that" - I got so fucking angry I had to switch off.

back when there was no crime, everyone lived harmoniously and there were absolutely no concern about a failing social contract

Just watched a fun little day-in-the-life YT video some lads took on their camcorder in the early 90s and 70% of the comments are something along the lines of "this is the utopia we had before the IMMIGRANTS came". We are so fucking cooked.

I'm saying they took full advantage of a deeply defective regulatory system & disinterested politicians and spent years hiding their appalling environmental conduct and increasingly parlous finances from the general public.

Companies which also regularly underperformed on key performance metrics and repeatedly failed to implement the internal monitoring systems needed to assess the state of their own infrastructure

Plans themselves that were never close to what was needed against a backdrop where the oh so desperate to invest companies rarely spent more than £5-6bn on CAPEX for almost thirty years, despite overall investment allocation growing significantly

Citizen scientists and campaign groups have tried to lift the veil for well over a decade only to hit a wall of denial and deliberate ambiguity at every juncture, until the proverbial dam eventually gave way.

Ofwat has been baleful but again this is being far too generous to industry itself. If it were so desperate to invest it could have made the case publicly, instead it took full advantage of a woefully inadequate system of self-reportage and a hamstrung, underfunded regulator in the form of the EA.

I'd also add that while the violent demonstrators were the usual mix of young men and football ultras, there are a lot of older/middle aged locals attending these things too (Epping after all is not particularly down-at-heel place)
