Made a crucial error that cost me my season this Fall. Used sterile soil but tried to save on mulch by using leaves from my backyard, ultimately introducing hookworms, aphids, etc. AND their eggs too! Use sterile mulches only!

I was awarded a partial scholarship to Floret Farm's Flower Farming Workshop that normally costs about $1,000 and runs 6 modules but unfortunately I cannot participate. Floret is such a beacon of educational wealth wanting to see others succeed. I will reapply when offered next year

I had 3 dahlia tubers i had no identification for. So i planted 1 in a 7 gallon grow bags and 2 around the yard. Almost November, I seriously doubt any flowers to bloom for fall but the 2nd flush starting Feb will bring blooms I'm sure of it!

Big gardening day today
I planted the presrpouts of succession 1 of Ranunculus & Anemone. For seeds, succession 1 direct sow of Night-Scented Stock, Clarkia & Blue Cornflower. Last, I soaked and laid in trays of vermiculite the 2nd succession of Ranunculus &Anemone.

Starting to soak succession 2 for 4 hours, changing water ea hour, then set up pre sprout in 75° outdoors with little spraying to maximize root growth, minimize rotted, & get sprouts growing. Mixture of vermiculite and potting soil will be used.

When checking corm viability after storage, all gladiolus methods, which vary based on size, all begin with total removal of paper protection. Hot yellow corms meat told me under no uncertain doubts do I have Fusarium. An educational lesson.

The state of the Freesia corms on 10/22/2025. Never presprouted nor woken up

and when held by the tops of the pointed end of the sheath, 2 or 3 corms/cormels or some variation on the kind fall through as if the sheath was too dry.

Ordered from East to Grow Bulbs, another Milwaukee based Dutch bulb vendor, These Freesisas, bought as doubles and singles mix, then absent mindedly combined without discretion in these egg crate holes, are no longer securing the corms inside their sheath. Now, the corms or morsels have separated

1st week temps stay below 83° My 1st succession Ranunculus, Anemone, and Freesia get planted. I will split up my gladiolus corms to make 3 successions to last until the Spring 26 special cultivars arrive

Today's progress: a 5th grow bags has a new sprout I found just 1" under the soil. The 2 largest dahlias are growing lateral stems at quite a rate, after 7 days of nothing happened following pinching them

How will I reconcile if that soil can be dried & reused and even more unavoidable is the offending grow bags. How do I clean it & sanitize the insides? Soap and water from the hose and then run through the washing machine? I'm in Virgin territory here with grow bags.

and not a health concern that the dahlias will suffer from. But boy do I have an ecosystem completely out of whack since ladybugs died 12 hours after being delivered and parasitic wasps are unwilling to hang around when no pests are out feeding. And need oil, any oil based horticultural product

The only problem is the leaf miner larvae dropped into my hand, but other than that, there's no cuts in the underside of the leaves nor are any insects visible under the leaf. Only the trail of slime is drags behind itself and progressively more eaten from the leaf. Resources say it's ornamental

at right, the 2 glass preserves are placed in the fridge at 45° and kept in dark, with their plastic see thru lids lightly affixed to create humidity but not be airtight thus preventing the exchange of gases

a glass bowl and glass square, food preserving dishes, repurposed for pre sprouting with vermiculite

Now with the vermiculite the consistency of a wet sponge rung out, both the larger bowl and square dish have Anemone corms and Ranunculus aviv and Tecolote Ranunculus corms pressed gently into it and covered with another 1.5" of vermiculite sprayed moist and lightly covered for humidity.
