In a fiery campaign launch at his alma mater, Edmonton's Michael Janz promises to keep pushing the Overton window In a fiery campaign launch at his alma mater, Edmonton's Michael Janz promises to keep pushing the Overton window

Pitching to a crowd of about 150 at his campaign launch on Friday, Edmonton city councillor Michael Janz vowed to fight back against a UCP takeover of city council—and to stand on matters of principle even when they don't poll well.

Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer has filed his notice of intent to run in the October municipal election. He’s expected to formally announce his candidacy for Mayor of Edmonton next week.

Jaffer was the MP for Edmonton Strathcona from 1997 to 2008 and now runs a restaurant on Whyte Ave.

it's cold comfort that it looks like the snivelling loser who wore a suit to his undergrad poli sci classes won't be prime minister. however, mark carney is the perfect embodiment of the soulless, technocratic, uber-capitalist Liberal party I hate.

I see nothing in the Liberal Party platform that could improve safety for people who use drugs, but plenty to make their lives more difficult & dangerous.

Reads to me like doubling down on drug war failures: more cops w/ more powers, harm reduction unmentioned. Alberta model goes federal.

Seems to reflect poorly on the interim chiefs too.

This story leaves out critical context. The issue is not that the UCP govt is merely funnelling interview requests from Alberta's Auditor General through a lawyer. The issue is that the lawyer or a senior ministry official must be present when civil servants are interviewed. 1

Edmonton has returned to near-record EMS dispatches for opioid poisoning. It's an unmitigated massacre of unhoused people.

Police allied w/ "downtown business recovery" & developers in the most vulnerable neighbourhoods, plus proponents of Alberta Model bear responsibility.

Again: it's a massacre.
