It is in my opinion an unfortunate aspect of the German representational democracy that parties (and their leadership) have too much power.

My apologies for the misquote.
There are a lot of politicians from both CDU/CSU and SPD who have problems with Merz and his administration. Some stated that out loud, some in backroom conversations. In many ways, it is their only way of quiet protest. The issues are clear however.

It is the duty of all members of parliament to vote according to their conscience and secondly according to the will of the people they represent.

*If* the process of electing the head of government is constituted as a free, secret election of *all* members of parliament, it makes no sense to call it a 'knife in the back' move if they vote how they think is right. German citizens elect the MOP mind you, not the party leadership.

We call it democacy.
