I discovered ‘Penda’s Fen’ in 2018, when I was writing on the poet Geoffrey Hill and stumbled upon this fascinating essay that reads the play alongside Hill’s ‘Mercian Hymns’ (1971):

And here it is being repeated, as fact, by something claiming to be a reliable unbiased source, on the most influential social media site, to an audience of millions whose critical thinking skills and historical knowledge are both in the toilet.

Some are just obsessed with him personally. But most, even in the core cult, gave him loyalty because they chose to see him as the embodiment of their dearest wish: namely, the deaths of the people they hate. If they stop believing he can ever deliver that cherished dream, they will dump him.
