Biggest shocker at my talk today, which is consistent with my other talks and media stuff, is that the acceptance rate for men and women are different at highly selective institutions. Men have a much higher acceptance rate because most colleges are scared to go beyond a 60/40 ratio.

Teaching *is* what I wanted to do but I sort of imagined doing it after a PhD. reality may have other plans. Might get to do just fun math though for my last two terms

I have the beginnings of get a Lizzie into a teaching role at a community college plan (I’ll probably still apply to some PhD programs but I just feel so apprehensive about the likelihood of getting in anywhere right now and then if I do having to go somewhere else)

And if we’ve learned anything from the tariffs:

Companies would rather sell less or even nothing and just wait as long as possible , than pay more for their product and have to raise their costs. They don’t want to be holding the bag when it falls apart

Warehouse workers had been getting relatively better pay increases than the larger workforce after 2020, but I think employers are trying to claw some of that back now.

In an attempt at labor discipline.

The first inference is that immigrant workforce who usually demand less money are not seeking new work if they’re happy with where they are.

But I also think it’s an attempt by warehouses faced with higher material costs bc of the tariffs to cut labor costs instead.

Anecdotally

a sales rep of mine who does like gloves and hairnets and bulk bags and pallet covers etc, goes in and out of warehouses all over the NW, says everyone is desperately trying to hire but all the applicants “want too much money”.

Also, in an unsure business environment, they are choosing to make nothing, move nothing, build nothing , rather than be left holding the bag/inventory/housing stock that costs more when the bottom falls out ,
