Card is smaller & easier to carry, more durable (passport book can get waterlogged, torn, etc.) and serves as backup if passport is lost/stolen/damaged.

If you are just getting it for air travel, a US passport *card* is a better option. (If you are getting a US passport book, I recommend also getting a passport card as a backup).

WHEREAS, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has, vide Notification No. CG-DL-E-21112024-258808 dated 21st November, 2024, notified the Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024, and has subsequently amended the same vide Notification No. CG-DL-E-22102025- 267074 dated 22nd October, 2025 (hereinafter collectively referred to as the "Rules"). 2. AND WHEREAS, Rule 8 (3) of the Rules mandates that no person shall: a) intentionally remove, obliterate, change, or alter the unique telecommunication equipment identification number; or b) intentionally use, produce, traffic in, have control or custody of, or possess hardware or software related to the telecommunication identifier or telecommunication equipment, knowing it has been configured as specified above. 3. AND WHEREAS, Rule 8 (4) of the Rules empowers the Central Government to issue directions to manufacturers of telecommunication equipment bearing International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number to provide assistance as required in relation to tampered telecommunication equipment or IMEI number. 4.
