I learned to read with an experimental method that used a simplified alphabet. Like, alphabet would be spelled alfabet. It was brilliant because we first tackled how to sound out letters and words, then they gradually moved us to the real alphabet. No tricks/strategies needed as in this article.

I've started using the Maps app on my iphone. It seems more accurate than most, and my favorite feature is "Go through this light and turn right at the next light." Because I can't tell how far away 300 feet is, and I always turn too soon.
