Thank you all the program officers at NIH that persisted through the 2025 fiscal year and were able to fund 99% of the total FY2024 budget. I know this has take a toll on everyone at NIH. Thank you for supporting important health and behavior science and helping to keep the U.S. a leader in science.

What if NIH had been 40% smaller? Replaying history with less NIH funding shows widespread impacts on drug-linked research

This paper does a great job with a "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario about NIH, supposing the consequences of the bottom 40% of the funding NIH grants never existed.

Congratulations, Yifan, for the Anatrace Award! Yifan’s work on the TRPV1 structure with David Julius helped launch the Resolution Revolution in cryo-EM. Not just in membrane proteinsβ€”hardly any area of biophysics today has remained untouched by the techniques Yifan pioneered.

Congratulations, Nuria! For many years, Nuria ran the Biochemistry and Biophysics of Membranes study section at the NIH. She trained generations of reviewers and taught many of us how to write a better grant.

The 2025 Google Scholar metrics are out. And (as previously) one of my favourite journals (Biophys J) is highly ranked in Biophysics. Only the 5 most cited papers are actually not Biophys J papers but rather BPS abstracts published elsewhere

Beware of metrics
