13. You don’t need to know what you are doing early on (or ever). You need to throw a lot of things at the wall. Fail in a hundred interesting ways and pay attention to how all of that makes you feel. You will develop a feel for what it is you do after about 50 essays.

Say, “I’m going to write the best piece I can in 20 hrs” and then you adjust how high you aim and how hard you work so that you can finish in twenty hours. If you want to push yourself to do deeper, you say 30 hours instead. If you want to get more reps, you go down to 10 hours.

12. I think about it like this: I want to have a balance between pushing myself hard so I learn new things, but I also want to finish stuff because there are certain things you can only learn by finishing. Deadlines is the tool that lets you find the balance.

You have your interests, you have your sense of humor, you have your grammatical tics, etc: the more you just incorporate all of the stuff that you love or that just happens for you, the more style emerges.

I talked to a friend who wants to start a blog and wanted some advice on that—how to find her voice and so on. A few random thoughts:

Anyway, I wanted to write this as an essay but got frustrated with how slowly I made progress so I decided to just write this with a 10 minute timer as a rapid test.

So: I guess the truce we have reached is be very careful about working on the right thing and spending proper time deciding what that is, but also, when you work highspeed is underrated.

The most important thing to accelerate is understanding the landscape you are moving through so you can find the best path, and to accelerate this you have to do a lot of things that look non-efficient, like playing around, like allowing yourself to get bored, not just typing.

Eg. going fast is better, but be very careful not to do “cargo cult fast”—that is, don’t just sit down and type 10,000 words because that feels like speed. Often the shorter, faster path is to take a long walk and turn the problem over in your head.

So, it is more a question of integrating the insights from both perspectives.

As you might already be thinking: these things are not incompatible. We both agree that the goal is to do the best possible work given the resource contraints we have; we both prefer that work to be sooner if possible.

It is like you are mapping a landscape, and the path you see when the landscape is still in mist is probably not as interesting as the path you can find when you have mapped the landscape fully.
