Intriguing to put this against Mark Fell's record with Explore Ensemble from last year; on paper similar, in practice completely different. (And different again from whatever it was Aphex was doing a few years ago.)

The David Axelrod approach to orchestration I can get behind (even if it is very much NOT 'Kammer'), but I'm not completely convinced.

What with all the Shibe and Aimard crossing my desk this month, I should probably just buy shares in Pentatone at this point.

As someone who moonlights as a copy-editor for a US-based publisher (and therefore spends a lot of time hand-inputting US punctuation), the fact that the em-dash has become a sort of watermark for identifying AI content is very demoralising.

This is the last of these that will be in front of the paywall. Future episodes will include Feldman, the wonderful Gilius van Bergeijk, autopsies in 19C Vienna (and 16C Leiden), KurtΓ‘g, various Erlkings, an important heatwave in New York, AND MORE. Subscribe! purlis.substack.com/subscribe

Absolutely heartbroken to learn of the passing of the singular, inimitable Eliane Radigue.

I have everything to say and nothing to say so I'll simply pass along this link to an interview I gave on Eliane and her work. She is now, officially, eternal.

R.I.P. Γ‰liane Radigue, one of the most innovative and radical composers of our century- if you haven’t heard her music yet, prepare for something simultaneously delicate and oceanic. I don’t love the word β€œgenius” but she deserves it.

Farewell to French composer Γ‰liane Radigue (1932-2026) who taught us the radical power of slowness, of patience, and attention stretched to the threshold of perception. Her work will continue to resonateβ€”slowly, endlesslyβ€”like a tone that never quite fades.

RIP the indomitable Éliane Radigue; a long and very rich life. I was very lucky to work with her; visiting her Paris apartment on Rue Liancourt was special. She lived there for decades, literally just around the block from Agnès Varda. Now there's a collaboration I would have loved to see happen.

RIP Andrew Weatherall: A sonic revolutionary and free spirit Andrew Weatherall is a dance music legend who was uncompromising until the end

Six years ago, we lost the best of us. This obituary, insanely, is one of the easiest things I've ever written. It was like the words were ready-formed, so etched into my head has been his inspiration since my mid teens.

Prepping for an interview I'm giving tomorrow, I read this blogpost by Liza Lim on winning the Grawemeyer Award for Composition at the end of last year. And it struck me as such a Liza thing to do to use her moment to turn our ears to two colleagues instead: lizalimcomposer.com/2025/12/02/g...
