I never knew a jewish mother could curse that expressively,
that long, that passionately.

n.b. It seems the coaster was the Oriental or Sea Beach Scenic Railway, a remnant of Luna Park that lasted until 1954.

There were four or more 'hills' going out, it seemed, to the horizon. Then the track turned around crossing four more hills on the way back.

And the track was doubled. That was the second track seen from the street. After going out and back once, the train traversed the entire route again.

Dad assured his wife that the ride was benign.
We all got on.

Eventually, the little train started, and went through the arch.

We could then see the extent of the ride.

Above this, there was a second level, also with two arches and track between them. A little train would go by there every so often.
There was no hint of any vertical displacement visible, except that the second track was above the first.
There was no indication of how long the track was.

We went to Coney Island. There was, on a street of business storefronts, and among them an innocent-looking ride. It had was a wall with two arches, and tracks leading from one arch to the other. There was a little train of cars on the track, stopped to let people on or off.

When I was about ten (so around 1952), I was taken on a roller coaster by my best friend Steven and his parents. Steven's mom hated roller coasters--his father had other ideas.
