Going to undergrad in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg, then working at the local newspaper, from 2016-2021, meant living every day in a microcosm of the contemporary debate around American history, identity and politics.

This article captures that push-and-pull like nothing else I've read.

β€œIt depends on where they come from and how they grew upβ€”what their grandma and granddaddy told them. Because when you tell our story”—she brought her index finger to her chestβ€”β€œyou’re really shaking the foundation of other people’s stories.” -Janice Canaday

What Is Colonial Williamsburg For? Telling the full story of the town’s past is an easy way to make a lot of people mad.

Thirty-one years ago, there was a slave auction reenacted at Colonial Williamsburg.

Some thought it powerful, many thought it insulting.

This summer, I traveled to Williamsburg myself to see how the country’s largest living history museum today tells the story of Black life at America’s founding.

When Adoption Promises Are Broken Many birth mothers hope to maintain contact with their child. But their agreements with adoptive parents can be fragile.

If you want to understand open adoption, it makes sense to start with birth parentsβ€”yet studies of them are few. 2+ yrs ago, I began talking w/ birth mothers to try to understand what living in an open adoption is like for them, and what rights or options they might have if challenges were to arise.

"How the Word is Passed" is my favourite non-fiction book of all time, both because of its information and because of its prose. An adaptation for young readers is amazing to hear about.

Just finished many hours of signing the books you all have preordered from @loyaltybooks.bsky.social. Shout out to those who got books not only for yourself but for your kids, your grandchildren, your students, and even the kid down the street who keeps riding his bike over your lawn. I’m grateful.

Kimmel’s refusal to capitulate stands out because so many other well-situated peopleβ€”those with the resources, platform, and power to stand up to the president, including, initially, the leaders of ABCβ€”have surrendered, withdrawn, or become Trump sycophants themselves. One by one, American leaders supposedly committed to principles of free speech, due process, democracy, and equality have abandoned those ideals when menaced by the Trump administration. These cascading acts of cowardice from the people best positioned to resist Trump’s authoritarian power grabs have made Trump seem exponentially more powerful than he actually is, sapping strength from others who might have discovered the courage to stand up. Defending democracy requires a collective refusal to acquiesce to lawless behavior from many different sectors of society. All of these powerful people trying to save their own skin have effectively multiplied Trump’s attacks on constitutional government, by enhancing a false sense of inevitability and invincibility.

Kimmel’s defiant return highlights one of the most disturbing dynamics of Trump II, that so many people in positions of leadership are chickenshit frauds who would rather fold in advance than put up anything resembling a fight www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

What happened to Jimmy Kimmel is not about one comedian who said something he should not have said. The Trump administration and its enforcers want to control your speech, your behavior, even your public expressions of mourning. You are not allowed to criticize the president’s associates. You do not even retain the right to remain silent; you must make public expressions of emotions demanded by the administration and its allies or incur its disfavor, which can threaten your livelihood. This is the road to totalitarianism, and it does not end with one man losing his television show.

The Republican reaction to Kirk’s murder has been a campaign of state repression that ends with Trumpist toadies deciding what Americans are allowed to think, do and say. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

These are the sort of routine wins Arsenal need for a long season. Comfortable result, shared minutes, a Zubimendi golazo, Noni cooking on the right. Our depth has opened up new levels.
