As someone who has advocated for open for over two decades (my 2008 PhD on OA was one of the first in the world), I am exhausted by trying to explain β€˜Open’ over and over and over again. Half of me thinks β€˜bugger it, you will get what you deserve’. But then the [commercial publishing] bastards win…

Well the AI systems are hoovering up any information they can - causing open systems to crash all over the place. The green OA material is likely very well represented in AI systems. No citation, no credit, but it’s there.

No it was for a stage production. The Dalek fell in love with an ATM. It was a very silly skit. We had to write more Dalek skits the following year because it was such a good prop.

A lifetime ago I used to do comedy shows. We built a dalek as a prop. Years later I worked for the ABC when the Dr Who franchise was being relaunched. The BBC sent out one of the original daleks for display in the ABC foyer. I have to say our one, made with halved tennis balls, was better quality!

Frontiers | Open science falling behind in the era of artificial intelligence Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to a new generation of content generation technologies that emerged after the rise of Transformer architecture...

ARGUMENT that we need to create an open infrastructure environment for AI - interesting perspective. Given there seems to be bottomless amounts of cash for AI related activity and little for open, maybe this could be a different approach to the issue www.frontiersin.org/journals/res...

Learn to Write Badly Cambridge Core - Sociology: General Interest - Learn to Write Badly

This is an excellent book discussing the issue of academic writing: β€œLearn to Write Badly: How to Succeed in the Social Sciences” www.cambridge.org/core/books/l...
I used to teach PhD students how to write in plain English - it takes a long time to learn to write so badly. It is hard to unlearn.

The Great Automatic Grammatizator: writing, labour, computers Click on the article title to read more.

It's a massive "I told you so" to whine about this, but I'm really annoyed at the scrabble to formulate "AI policies" and to "AI-proof assessment".

I warned our Head of Department of this coming storm in 2017, when I wrote this doi.org/10.1111/criq...

CONSULTATION: This is a good step forward for the Australian Research Council's future research assessment plans - moving away from commercial databases and also away from ranking of universities. Have your say! The consultation draft is linked from this page www.arc.gov.au/new-approach...

TollBit - Monetize your content The platform for AI content licensing at scale. TollBit helps you monitor AI traffic, manage licensing deals & monetize your content in the AI era.

How long til academic publishers start charging AI bots for robot access to content using things like:

tollbit.com/bot-paywall/

How much of that will go back to authors?

What colour open access is "open to humans, paywalled to bots"?

I don’t have an issue with this per se - assuming the direct answer has some relationship with reality. But scholarship (including studying) is a verb - it’s not the answer rather the process that matters

17.07.2025 07:24 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes that’s your area, I was posing the question more broadly for us as a sector. Are there plans anywhere to look at this systematically? It would be good to do a study across multiple countries.

17.07.2025 06:01 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

What we need to think about is trying to understand the impact of these on the level of engagement with the actual literature. I expect the engagement drop will be swift and significant.

From dead woods to triumph of nature, 30 years after the Great Storm The devastating winds of 1987 felled 15 million trees but also prompted a radical change to the way we work with the countryside to let it heal itself

Yes coming from an actual wild country this struck us in the UK. Then in 2017 on 20th anniversary of the great storm there was commentary about Toys Hill and the observation - shock- that if you left nature alone she would sort it out. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
