I get that you're frustrated with these things, but I don't believe that sites like E6 and FA use an algorithm to decide these things. You are competing in a very saturated marketplace, where every second of attention is being sought after.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of things we can't control

It makes sense that if you sort by popular, of course the larger artists with a larger base that follow their works are going to engage and drive numbers. There doesn't need to be an algorithm or deliberate manipulation.
What other platforms are there that have such a comprehensive tagging system? Unlike other sites like FA etc, you can often find things you are looking for. I never use the top or popular tabs, I am usually looking for something or an artist in particular.
It's brilliant for finding references.
Those range instrumentation ships always look so... sinister with their big parabolic dishes.
