Different AM processes vary in material compatibility, dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. According to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), AM is classified into seven categories: Powder Bed Fusion (PBF), Material Extrusion (ME), Directed Energy Deposition (DED), Vat Photopolymerization (VP), Binder Jetting (BJ), Material Jetting (MJ) and Sheet Lamination (SL) [97]. These processes exhibit distinct advantages and limitations in orthopedic applications. Figure 2 illustrates these cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies.
