Last week we celebrated the birthday to our dear friend, Dame Janet Baker. 🥰

In June, Dame Janet attended a London recital by our 24/25 Emerging Artists. At this joyful occasion, the group met Dame Janet, who passed on her wisdom to the group. A very special moment, indeed.

A man dressed in a black suits is held up in the air by his calves by four acrobats. They are shirtless while wearing black trousers. In the right of a picture, the Chorus of Scottish Opera stand in a diamond-shaped huddle. They are wearing purple and green tracksuits. They are singing in front of a screen which has in small font at the top 'Where is Eurydice?'

Gluck's fabulous score. Gravity defying acrobatics. A phenomenal cast and orchestra. Yaron Lifschitz’s staging of Oprheus and Eurydice had it all.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - The Guardian.
Thank you to Edinburgh International Festival, Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Circa.

Review: Trial By Jury / A Matter of Misconduct – Scottish Opera ★★★★ With its latest double bill, Scottish Opera offers a study in contrast and continuity: the enduring power of satire, from the gleefully anarchic world of Gilbert and Sullivan to the all-too-familiar farce of contemporary British politics. "Trial by Jury", given a zany reboot as a reality courtroom TV show, shares the stage with the premiere of "A Matter of Misconduct!", a new one-act operetta by Emma Jenkins and composer Toby Hession.

"This is operetta, not only for the nostalgic, but for the now." Scottish Opera impresses with a double-bill of cultural-political satire, one classic, one new.

The Opera Highlights team stand to the left of the photograph in a line. One of them is pointing at a Highland cow. In front of them is a river, and on the other side of the river is a friendly Highland cow approaching them. Behind the Highlight cow and the river, is the Opera Highlights tour van. It is black, and on the side it says, 'All Aboard for a first-class night out'. The sky is cloudy and grey.

We're in the final stretch of Opera Highlights rehearsals before we head out on tour! 24 venues from 25 Jan - 22 March and one incredible show set in a Scottish train station. There's hellos, goodbyes, and crossed wires - just like every good opera! ♥ Featuring music from Handel to Tchaikovsky.

This shows two screen shots from the Apple notes app, super imposed onto a photograph of the Theatre Royal, Glasgow. The notes say

INS:

-The first time seeing Emilia Marty

-Glasgow Theatre Royal date nights

-That moment when the house lights dim

-Lemon groves

-Tink-a-tank (Come see our Trial by Jury)

-Bringing a pal to the opera

-Solo trips to the opera

-Humming waltzes from The Merry Widow all the way home

-Cement mixers

-Romanticising waiting in train stations

-Sending secret messages via fans

-That FOH team member at Edinburgh Festival Theatre who always remembers you 🥰

-Taking pictures at the final curtain call

-Giving your neighbour a full plot summary (be the MVP we all love)

-That first spoonful of interval ice cream

-Appreciating the gorgeous interior of HMT Aberdeen

-Wearing whatever you want and feeling fab

-A Pre-show coffee at Eden Court's Riverside Cafe

OUTS:

-Being so late you miss the overture

-Forgetting to buy a programme

-“Opera is not for me”

-"Wait you perform WHERE?" (loads of places, pal, keep up)

-Waiting until last minute to book your tickets

-Unwrapping sweets SUPER LOUDLY

-Not sharing your sweets (criminal)

-"I'll just check my Whatsapp quickly" 📲BESTIE NO - we can see u

-Forgetting our U26 tickets are just £15

-"Maybe I'll skip the pre-show talk" (nooo come join us!)

-Sleeping on the Opera Highlights touring schedule (plz, we could be around the corner from you)

-Worrying about whether it's cringe to post about your night at the theatre on Insta (DO IT - we love main character energy)

-The mad Google search of "opera plot" five minutes before curtain up (srsly - our programme tells you this and more)

-Thinking opera is only for big stages (anywhere can be an opera house )
