And as a final note: just like back then, so many of the people who would have the least to lose by speaking up remain silent. Because doing something would be uncomfortable. Others, meanwhile, can’t wait to assist fascism’s rise (in German: they are Steigbügelhalter) in the name of “civility.” #Fin

I think @historleans.bsky.social is very right in her analysis: we have studied fascism. We KNOW how it worked. What we learn is the emotional dimension of it, how it actually FEELS.

The belief that fascists don’t mean what they say/will be “responsible” while in office, the sheer complacency of many, the “doomer” reproaches for the past years, the “A (no state power) is just as bad as B (all state power),” the normalization of violence, the (not so secret) enthusiasm, all here.

As a historian who grew up in Germany, I studied a lot on the collapse of the Weimar Republic and German fascism, especially the early 1930s. The intellectual question of “how could people do this/let this happen” were answered then. Now, people are answering the emotional aspect of that question.

@StephenM on X: Legal insurrection. The President is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, not an Oregon judge. Portland and Oregon law enforcement, at the direction of local leaders, have refused to aid ICE officers facing relentless terrorist assault and threats to life. (There are more local law enforcement officers in Oregon than there are guns and badges in the FBI nationwide). This is an organized terrorist attack on the federal government and its officers, and the deployment of troops is an absolute necessity to defend our personnel, our laws, our government, public order and the Republic itself.

Purdue University student newspaper parts ways with F-1 visa students The Exponent and the university came to similar conclusions after Purdue distanced itself from the publication this summer.

“We are not hiring international students in the interest of their safety and to avoid jeopardizing their legal status in the United States – not because we don’t want them,” said Editor in Chief Olivia Mapes in an editorial Thursday.

To call Sortor "conservative" is to grant that "conservative" is a term that could accurately apply to someone who appeared on Alex Jones's livestream of the Charile Kirk memorial.

Fun fact. The current head of the DOJ's Civil Rights division was the lawyer that represented Ngo in his specious claim that the milkshake he was hit with contained cement.

Doubting his worth, Smith needed reassurance. He actively sought Praise and flattery and surrounded himself with sycophants in order to bolster his ego. His vanity and egotism could barely conceal his self-doubt and lack of confidence. He fed on friendships with persons who agreed with him, or pretended to, and he rarely questioned anyone who told him he was a great man. In an attempt to win sympathy and support, he bared his soul to people he hardly knew. When I visited him late in his life, Smith confided his most private thoughts in the hope of gaining my admiration and respect. The supreme irony of his career may have been that his bigoted crusading and hate-mongering were in fact a quest for love.
To give meaning to his life and to overcome the tremendous guilt he felt, Smith created out of his own imagination his mission to save civilization and gave it God's stamp of approval. He convinced himself that he had been chosen by God to save Christianity and America. But his hate-inspiring crusades against minorities fulfilled only his own needs. His battle, no less real because internal, was not really against flesh-and-blood foes but against imaginary ones. No evidence exists that he was ever wronged by Jews or Communists. Only their opposition to his activities confirmed his convictions and further fueled his insecurity until at last he lived fully in a world of fantasy in which every action and reaction had a hidden meaning.

These two paragraphs from a 1988 book about the founder of the America First party and the Christian Nationalist Crusade sound a bit like a certain someone in the news these days.

Tucker Carlson's content is to the 2020s what the National Enquirer or Weekly World News were to the 1980s. The difference is that those two publications were not algorithmically amplified by the world's richest man (the way X amplifies Tucker), and were taken seriously by neither political party.

A statute may "enshrine a tradition," but that is not the only thing it does. A statute codifies law, just the same as statutes criminalizing homicide and bank robbery, and it is just as "clear" that violating the statute is unlawful.

Hardline nationalist to become Japan’s first female prime minister Takaichi is to succeed prime minister Shigeru Ishiba as she wins in run-off against Shinjiro Koizumi

I won‘t claim to be an expert in Japanese politics but a radical right party doing well in elections and the mainstream right party shifting sharply to the right sounds awfully familiar. Let‘s just say good reasons to believe that this won‘t be great for Japan.
