R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr., editor-in-chief of The American Spectator, and a well-known conservative columnist, wrote at the time specte Werren Richardson nomination: "Liberty Lobby was founded in the mid-1950's by Willis Carto. Carto remains to this day its mainspring and its devoted treasurer. It has always had a colorful collection of bigots and simpletons around it practicing the solitary vice of political extremism -- namely, applying conspiracy theories to every vexatious public problem." Finally, the conservative weekly, Human Events, described Liberty Lobby, in its May 2, 1981 issue, as: "An organization which most responsible conservatives have long believed exploits racist and antiSemitic sentiments and which is headed by Wills [sic] Carto, who has long been sympathetic to Hitler's Germany."
It was impossible to be on "the right" in DC from the 1960s into the 1980s & not be aware of The Liberty Lobby. Most self-described "conservatives" dismissed Carto and the LL as "fringe kooks" who had little influence and weren't worth paying attention to. Unfair to tar the whole "right" with them.
