I filtered out any art where a character was drawn female, but did include any rule 63 pictures where canonically female or genderless characters were drawn as male

OK SO I have dived in more detail into the numbers. Here is the #1 and #2 most popular male character for each year only counting art posted IN that year, and not disqualifying anyone for appearing in previous years. The takeaway here seems to be that people really loves foxes. And Sonic.

It's arguable, but the version that has mainstream popularity is the one from the movie, not the one with the green jumpsuit in the 80s that only a tiny number of people remember and who has a noticeably different personality and design
