The problem is far bigger than Jeffrey Epstein | Rebecca Solnit Treating the scandal as an aberration misunderstands the global epidemic of violence against women

"One of the reasons the epidemic of violence against women is so unacknowledged is because cases like these are talked about individually, and often treated as though they are shocking aberrations rather than part of a pervasive pattern that operates at all levels of society."

US medical groups fill gap with own vaccine guides amid โ€˜information crisisโ€™ As official health guidance changes, scientific groups are stepping in with evidence-based recommendations

As science becomes increasingly politicized and federal officials change policies on vaccination, sometimes reportedly overruling their own scientists, independent scientific groups are now stepping into the gap for evidence-based recommendations. My latest:

Everyone in Alberta should very concerned about this.

The targeted campaign against @carrietait.bsky.social is a direct attempt to intimidate one of the finest, most diligent reporters in Canada. In doing so, it is an attack on journalism, an accountability mechanism essential for democracy.

Absolute scenes with the demise of the print press; Julian Alaphilippe stole a cardboard sign from a spectator, ripped it up and stuffed part of it under his jersey. Newspapers were so much better. #tdf25 #tdf2025

A sign on a brown door reads "Room 426 - The Narwhal News Society v. Attorney General"

Carol Linnitt, co-founder of The Narwhal, flew to Vancouver in April, took a glass elevator up a glimmering skyscraper and entered a boardroom full of lawyers. There she was grilled, for hours, about details of The Narwhalโ€™s press freedom lawsuit against the RCMP.

Federal court says copyrighted books are fair use for AI training Anthropic didnโ€™t break the law when it trained its chatbot with copyrighted books, a judge said, but it must go to trial for allegedly using pirated books.

I once had a fight with my publisher's lawyer over what constitutes "fair use." He said reprinting 4 lines of a poem without the poet's explicit permission was too much. But AI gobbling up whole books now counts as "fair use." Something is definitely wrong with US copyright law.

The fires in/near LA this year made me realize how little people care. I've covered Canada's biggest wildfires and they've stayed on the front page for days, weeks. But people lose interest, which I struggle to understand when people's homes are burning and I'm in the thick of it.
