“Then, maybe, since you mention that.” He reaches into his pocket, pulling out a few coins; something of currency for the country they were in. “Have some money to get what you want later. I know it isn’t a gift, but—“

He shrugs to him, then returning to reclining on the front of the jeep.

He sits in stunned silence for a few moments; his eyes reading over the title over and over. Chet must’ve been really strapped for cash, yet he still went out of his way to get him this.

“Thank you,” he manages after putting it by his side. “I should’ve gotten you something.”

He peers over, watching as he slinks off to the passenger side of the jeep and grabs his gift.

“You shouldn’t have done that,” he admits before he can stop himself. After all, this is probably the first time he can recall getting a gift from a friend in quite some time.

He rests comfortably in the moment, watching the little specks of stars that dotted the skies. It isn’t until Chet speaks again that he turns his head towards him.

“You did?” he answers, slightly stupefied. “I didn’t think any of us had time to break away to get gifts.”

“They are.” Truthful, but a sinking feeling hit his gut. “I’ve been . . . apprehensive of the dark as of late.”

He didn’t want to say fear; he didn’t want to either admit to it, so assuaging it will do.

“But it’s nice to see the stars. Something that’s always the same no matter where you go.”

He gives a pointed laugh. Nothing too boisterous, small and airy like they tend to be for him.

He helps himself, sitting and reclining back to gaze into the abyss of stars. “Times like these,” Kakyoin informs him, “I find myself doing the same. But I tend to like the sun shining down on me more.”

It’s normal for Chet to wander off, maybe more so than Polnareff or in his case. He notices that he is very much missing; his intuition following where he, logically, must be.

“You’ve got to do a better job of sneaking off.”
