LEXINGTON—302 Augusta Square, a W&L third-year Village apartment, was broken into on Sunday, prompting a Public Safety alert to the student body and reminding student residents to take more cautious safety measures.

LEXINGTON- W&L third-year Village residents now lock their porch doors in the buildings surrounding 302 Augusta Square.

LEXINGTON- Students received the original Public Safety alert around 24 hours ago. There has been no update or response from Chief Public Safety Officer Alex Rabar. Rabar was appointed to this position in April after serving as Interim Director of Public Safety since January 2025.

LEXINGTON- W&L third-year resident Jane Sandridge agrees with Meyer's sentiment that this intruder alert is making her and her roommates more cautious. Though she does not feel more unsafe, as similar incidents have occurred before, this has reminded her and her peers to keep doors locked.

LEXINGTON- In a phone call to the Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office, a representative is unaware of Sunday's intruder. He provides the extension to the office's investigator, who is not available. The office offers no new information despite being listed in the alert to W&L's student body.

LEXINGTON- W&L sophomore Emma Meyer says that the email notice is prompting her and her roommates to lock their doors in the Woods Creek Apartment. She says that this is a shift from the habitual expectation of safety in the W&L community, in an interview at 1:25 p.m. on Wednesday.

LEXINGTON- Pritt says a notice was sent to the W&L community as required by the state, though it was sent at 9:24 p.m. on Tuesday, over 48 hours after the intruder entered an apartment near 302 Augusta Square, Lexington, VA, around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday.

LEXINGTON- Washington and Lee University Public Safety Investigator Alex Pritt says in a phone call at 12:35 p.m. on Wednesday that an on-campus break-in occurred on Sunday, May 4th instead of May 6th as previously stated in an email alert to the student population.
