I know I didn’t hallucinate this thing, but I might be misremembering details. Unfortunately, I can’t confirm because the SEO is completely dominated by articles about the Nintendo suit. Even searching “does Pocketpair own any patents?” just brings up more Nintendo shit.

One wrinkle though was that Pocket pair, —allegedly—was planning to pursue legal action over a patent for some kind of touch-screen functionality. Which could then create a narrative that Nintendo was keeping them in line.

Back when Nintendo initially sued Pocketpair, I swear I read an article or saw a video explaining that “patent everything” has been common practice among Japanese devs since the 80s. Essentially ensuring that no one can sue anyone else without blowing the whole industry up.
