that was exactly his rationale, and how lucky for you to have seen it performed. i’m jealous!

28. 4’ 33” - John Cage (1952)
i’m not even convinced this can be classed as instrumental, but it certainly has no vocals… either way, i couldn’t resist!

it’s a great joy to be able to play an instrument, regardless of ability
28.02.2026 15:35 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0afraid not. in truth i used to be pretty decent, but that was 30 years ago! i stopped for ages, and have only started to pick it up again in the last 2 years. unfortunately it’s not like riding a bike, and i get frustrated at the things i used to do by instinct that i simply can’t do now…
28.02.2026 15:30 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0i went out for lunch earlier and ended up sat next to a table including one of the gentlemen i take weekly guitar sessions with. i said hello, was introduced to his wife, who then proceeded to say she’s heard all about me and what a brilliant guitarist i am! it’s not true by the way… but how lovely
28.02.2026 15:02 — 👍 16 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0hopefully an own goal please. we’ve won only once at Anfield in 60+ years, and i flipping missed it!
28.02.2026 14:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0he was a very original bass player, weirdly underrated because his songwriting genius, singing etc takes precedence. if he was “only” the bass player in a band i think he would be talked about in the same breath as James Jamerson, Bootsy Collins, Bernard Edwards, Carol Kaye, the list goes on….

28. Paperback Writer - The Beatles (1966)
for years i took no notice of this song. it was good, but they had much better tracks that i enjoyed more. but i heard it again recently and was blown away. this fucking rocks and the lyrics are just brilliant!

i am prepared to wager a small bet he doesn’t, but will have a smarmy answer lined up as a retort..

27. Aumgn - Can (1971)
really not enough characters to even begin to describe what is going on here. but suffice to say it manages to be experimental, alarming, inspired, irritating, hypnotic, boring, comical and self indulgent all at the same time
youtu.be/4Up6Mw5SxJM?...
good choice! was only playing Antbox yesterday, thinking how raw and exciting the early lineup was

27. Doncamatic - Gorillaz (2010)
the problem with being as prolific as Damon Albarn is some songs do not get the attention they deserve (as another one is sure to be on its way). but this is a great pop song that sits nicely alongside his best singles

26. Equinoxe Part 5 - Jean-Michel Jarre (1978)
Jarre undeniably deserves immense credit for his influence on music over the years. i could have equally picked anything off the sublime Oxygene lp, but i always loved this wonderful song as a child

26. Little Johnny Jewel (Parts 1 & 2) - Televison (1975)
never mind year zero, when it comes to punk/new wave/etc, this is song zero; everything happened from here on in. a combination of spare, almost primitive production capturing playing of finesse

25. Gray Prison Blues - The Lovin’ Spoonful (1966)
i have always liked the two soundtracks released by this ridiculously underrated band. these lps are full of wonderful short instrumentals that remind me of some of the Beach Boys Smile bootlegs
youtu.be/uDfMYMuH1v4?...
well We Love You / Dandelion was an undeniably great single, as was I Can See For Miles. but absolutely by 1968 everyone was “back to basics”, apparently inspired by The Basement Tapes bootlegs widely in circulation
25.02.2026 11:39 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0just occurred to me - in 1967 Nash’s masterpiece King Midas… failed to light up the charts. similarly the magnificent Lady Friend written by Crosby also failed spectacularly when released by The Byrds

25. King Midas In Reverse - The Hollies (1967)
The Hollies go full blown psychedelic in this utterly brilliant song. the record buying public go “err, no thanks” and the single pretty much flops. Graham Nash goes to California and doesn’t come back

that’s a brilliant story! thanks for sharing that 👍

23. When The Machines Rock - Tubeway Army (1979)
a forgotten gem. ironically, it may be the catchiest melody on the entire Replicas lp, even without any lyrics! i always thought this would have made a great theme tune to a cool television programme
youtu.be/mcio_lL0iDk?...
nice! don’t tempt me with a comeback though…. 😱
